The Opportunity We are seeking an an experienced communications professional to oversee communications internally and externally, as needed, in a dynamic, multi-stakeholder environment. In this newly created role, the Communication Officer will lead by influence and function as  a  strategic communications  partner to  a  variety  of constituencies  with  a  focus on internal audiences, executive and board communications, content creation, and programmatic support. He/she will collaborate across the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to promote and protect the foundation's brand and help advance grantmaking objectives to enable greater impact for the work of its philanthropic initiatives. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and a curious and agile relationship builder who is able to be both strategic and tactical.
What you will do: Manage the day-to-day operations of internal communications with the ability to drive flawless execution. Support external communications and program-related work as needed. Develop and guide strategic content development to help achieve foundation and grantmaking objectives. Contribute strategic communication support to the President, the board, and the senior management team, including preparing talking points, letters, presentations, and other key communications to represent the organization effectively. Oversee the quarterly board book production process, including quality control of content and printing. Consult on supplemental communications to the Board of Trustees. Establish credibility with team members, internal clients, and when appropriate, grantees to gain an understanding of substantive priorities and translate those priorities into communications vehicles. Build relationships across the organization and provide insightful feedback to leadership, management and the communications team on communication issues, opportunities, and ways to improve engagement on strategic priorities. Identify methods to ensure the foundation's work effectively connects with its target audiences and execute accordingly. Collaborate on the planning, execution, and alignment of internal and external meetings and events. What you bring with you: Qualifications and Competencies Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience in communications. Experience in the philanthropic, nonprofit or academic environment is a plus. Mission-driven mindset. Proven ability to convey information and ideas through excellent, high-quality verbal and written communications to individuals or groups at all levels of an organization. Committed to building relationships and capable of influencing without authority. Strong writing and content development skills, especially internal facing. Demonstrated ability to manage internal client relationships, including at the executive level. Ability to think strategically and lead tactically with an entrepreneurial spirit. Superior editorial and interpersonal skills with a broad range of communications and project management experience. Experience developing and deploying various communications strategies on behalf of a senior leadership team. Ability to navigate ambiguity with grace and commitment to excellence, in both strategy and execution. Flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a leader who can positively and productively impact those around them. High EQ, sound judgment, and a self-starter capable of working without direct supervision. Curiosity; willingness and comfort with asking questions. The expected salary range for this position is between $185,000 and $235,000 per year. Our job titles and salary ranges may span more than one career level, and the salary offered to a candidate will be determined based on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, job-related knowledge and skill set, depth of experience, certifications and/or degrees, and our practice of upholding salary equity within the foundation. Our health benefits include employer-paid options for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents; a mental wellness program; paid parental leave; employer-paid disability and life insurance benefits; and pre-tax flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care expenses. Other benefits include six weeks of paid time off per year and ten paid holidays; a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a foundation contribution of up to 10% and a Roth 401(k) option; a matching gifts program for qualifying charitable contributions; hybrid work arrangements and a home office stipend; and a commuter benefits program. Work Arrangements/Location This position is based at the foundation's main office in Palo Alto, CA. Candidates must be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area. Under the foundation's residency policy and hybrid work arrangements, employees must reside within a reasonable driving distance of the foundation's Palo Alto office and work onsite a minimum of four days a month, the weeks of May and November board meetings, and on periodic occasions throughout the year when foundation business needs require.
