Costume Maintenance Lead Tech Opportunities – Universal Epic Universe

JOB SUMMARY:

Supports management in leading the daily operations of the Costume Maintenance team. Fabricate, repair and finish costumes and accessories for Entertainment Venues at Universal Parks and Resorts while upholding the highest performer and guest safety standards. Responsibilities include costume construction, patterning and pattern alterations, machine and hand sewing, mold making, working with silicone, fiberglass repair, foam carving, casting, wig care, pigmentation and painting including color matching, scenic applications, faux finishes, automotive spray, and airbrushing techniques.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides work direction to team members. Assists supervision by assigning projects to technicians. Prepares project work by searching out materials, supplies, samples as asked. Maintains status on project with each individual artist to ensure that directions are being followed and all finishing work is done in a timely manner and at an acceptable quality standard. Ensure the shop/lab work areas remain clean and organized.
Functions as a Costume Technician I in alignment with the team to maintain the output of work to the standard and quality expectations of management and our guests. Set the example through hands-on approach and show the team dedication to timely repairs. Fabricate, troubleshoot, and repair character heads, hands, feet, accessories, and coverings. Painting processes to include properly assessing, mixing, and applying airbrush and/or faux paint techniques, automotive paint applications, as well as wet/dry brush and sponge painting. Execute color mixing of paints for accurate color matching to achieve approved character looks. Utilize various sculpting and mold making techniques to cast/vacuform final products in materials such as latex, silicone, resin, plastics, and urethanes. Create patterns for and complete the construction/application of foam costume pieces as well as fur and fleece character skins.
Monitor equipment, documentation, supplies, facilities and initiates repair, replacement, re-order, and reporting process. Monitors the progress of the process to assure timely completion. Completes administrative tasks relating to the process and other activities as assigned.
Observe shows/character sets for costume appearance to maintain quality. Communicate and troubleshoot with Supervisory team members as it relates to issue/notes that have arisen surrounding costume produced, altered or repaired in house. Assist with the fittings of new and existing performers and adjust costumes per supervisory authorization. Assess and advise on ergonomics, fit, and safety issues form performers and make suggestions for repairs/improvements to Supervisors. Execute approved modifications applying the highest safety standards. Perform onsite analysis of character/costume problems, including costume safety issues.
Organize and assist with training of new and current team members. Ensure trainer is identified and that training is being delivered per Standard Operating Procedure.
Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Associate's or bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent; degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

3+ years costume fabrication and maintenance with the finishing aspect of costumes/animated figures/characters is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to work with airbrush, vacuform, saws, drills and other heavy-duty power tools.
Ability to work with spandex, fleece, fur, and hairs for application to character heads, bodies, and accessories. Working and practical knowledge of all materials and tools for working with hair, feathers and fur needed.
Ability to mix and color match paints per art direction. Working and practical knowledge of types of paints including spray, latex, and acrylic paints for application to costume pieces.
Working and practical knowledge of carving and patterning foams, sculpting, casting and otherwise building with latex, silicone, urethanes, and plastics.
Working and practical knowledge of fitting, performing alterations and troubleshooting for performer comfort.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Position requires ability to work with multiple teams, disciplines and maintain a service-oriented mind set. Role will require at times handling delicate information or proprietary information in a professional and confidential manner. Understanding of work performed, maintaining quality, providing positive direction, meeting deadlines and consistently lead by example.
In this role the lead will serve as a functioning Costume Tech and serve as an example of proper conduct and protocol. The lead will be given a portion of administrative work to conduct on a regular basis to assist the team as well as building upon opportunities for future advancement. The lead will be a part of assuring a clean, safe and harassment free workplace by assuring important information is shared with management and assisting in finding resolution to concerns and incidents.
