Overview: The Cytotechnologist examines cellular samples obtained through pap smears, needle aspirations, biopsies and other tests to detect cancer, viral and bacterial infections, and other abnormalities utilizing knowledge of the expanding variety of methods of preparation and staining in the laboratory. This position is also responsible for documenting findings and collaborating with medical staff to discuss abnormal findings. Working under direct supervision, this position participates plays a crucial role in detecting abnormalities and diseases at a cellular level to contribute to accurate diagnoses and effective treatment planning for patients.Talent Pool: Alied Health Responsibilities: Performs all processes associated with testing of laboratory specimens within the department to include: Microscopic examination of cellular samples to identify abnormal cells for the diagnosis of diseases; Preparation and staining cellular specimens using established procedure; Molecular testing on automated platforms; Other duties as assigned.Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities and maintenance performed. Assumes responsibility for and takes action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues prior to releasing testing results to maintain accuracy in specimen testing and reporting.Actively supports and complies with established laboratory protocols and regulatory standards to ensure compliance with safety and quality guidelines. Prioritizes duties and manages workload ensuring established turnaround times are met. Utilizes lab/facility systems to accurately document lab activity to include various worksheets, forms, task logs, and pending logs, according to established site protocols throughout the shift to ensure established turnaround times and high quality are met. Practices efficient use of supplies and actively participate in inventory control to maintain a cost-effective and well-equipped laboratory.Meets technical training requirements, completes required competencies and assignments by the due date and maintains knowledge of procedure changes. Demonstrates effective problem-solving skills to assure optimal outcome: Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and utilizes available resources to troubleshoot. Escalates complicated/unresolved issues to appropriate designee. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems/processes deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.Collaborates with other healthcare professionals concerning diagnostic findings and address customer service issues to ensure operational excellence and customer satisfaction. Investigate and follow up on issues, problems and complaints as brought up (internal and external).Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: EDUCATION:Required: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or cytotechnology, an accredited institution.
