Overview: VPS is searching for individuals with a passion for network engineering and prepared for a fast-paced environment with the opportunity to work on many different network architectures across a diverse set of platforms. The Network Services team is comprised of a group of network specialists and network engineers with varying degrees of technical expertise. VPS is looking to grow the team and add experienced individuals to complement our existing staff.
This role is for a mid-level network engineer to work in our Birmingham, AL office. This is a full-time position. As a Data Network Engineer, you will provide network engineering services to our nationwide broadband provider client base. The role is very technical and hands-on with advanced network designs across many different platforms. The candidate will be required to manage multiple projects concurrently.
Responsibilities: Implement, upgrade, maintain, troubleshoot, and support Internet Service Provider (ISP) network topologies and equipment including routers, switches, MPLS Routed Optical Networks (RON), and FTTx access equipment across various vendorsWork within a ticketing system to address client issuesPerform network hardening and architecture assessmentsEvaluate networking equipment and software solutions for clientsCollaborate with team members across the networking, managed services, and IT security groupsProvide escalation role for Specialist/Tier 1 staff members to address client issuesDiagnose and remediate ISP network problems and outagesEscalate network issues to vendor Technical Assistance Centers (TAC) and collaborate on resolutionsRespond to and resolve customer service requests in a prompt, efficient and courteous mannerDevelop Method of Procedures (MOP), configuration scripts, and supporting documentation for scheduled network maintenancePerform periodic network maintenance including software upgrades, cutovers, intrusive changes, and diagnosticsManage and documenting configuration changes and network architectures with tools including Excel, Word, and VisioDescribe technical information to non-technical individuals Qualifications & Requirements Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve technical issues efficiently and quicklyProficient problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to adapt to changing environmentsWillingness to work occasional after-hours as needed for implementation and troubleshooting supportExceptional skill in communication, collaboration, task organization, time management, and time efficiencyAbility to occasionally travel with no limitations with driving or flyingPosition is subject to clean a background check Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in computer information systems, computer science or a related field is required.CCNA/JNCIS/Network+ or similar certification requiredMinimum 3 years of experience in network design and administration roleHands-on IP routing and Ethernet switching experience with Cisco, Arista, or Juniper equipmentOptical transport experience with Ribbon, Ciena, or Fujitsu is a plusOLT experience with Calix or Adtran is a plusComprehensive understanding of Ethernet switching technologies including Link Aggregation, VLANs, xSTP, etcStrong understanding of network protocols including BGP, OSPF, and ISISStrong understanding of ISP services including DHCP, DNS, PPPOE, CGN, and RADIUSBasic understanding of IPv6 and dual-stack environments Vantage Point is offering full-time positions with benefits and contract positions for these openings.
