Berkeley Lab's Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) is hiring a Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) Project Manager.
This role reports to the Department Head and involves managing multiple large-scale projects from $50K to over $100M, from conception to close-out.
Projects are high-visibility, high-risk, and often in congested areas.
The Project Manager may also engage in DOE Complex improvement initiatives and oversee renovation and utility upgrade projects.


Specific Responsibilities: Manage large-scale, complex demolition projects of contaminated facilities using Construction Managers, Project Coordinators, Project Controls, Facilities staff, LBNL support staff, and subcontractors.
Incorporate input from the EH&S Division and QA Program to ensure projects are completed safely, within budget, on schedule, and according to specifications.
Align group activities, budgets, funding, workforce planning, EH&S, waste management, and property management to meet project, Division, and Laboratory goals.
Ensure all project staff and subcontractors follow EH&S and QA requirements, addressing any issues promptly.
Coordinate D&D project activities, and if assigned, renovation and utility upgrades with the LBNL community.
Work closely with EH&S to accurately represent the Laboratory in project matters with stakeholders.
Maintain client relationships and interface with stakeholders and regulators.
Lead project scope, budget, schedule development; review and approve cost estimates and financial reports.
Manage and control contractual commitments to ensure compliance with specifications, drawings, and subcontract terms.
Schedule and coordinate project reviews per LBNL and DOE requirements.
What is Required:

Project Manager Level 2: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science/Chemistry, Geosciences, or a related field, or professional certification in Construction, Project Management, AND 5 years of relevant experience in D&D, waste management, or construction facilities project management.
Experience in leading and managing D&D activities using project management principles and controls; OR 9 years of total combined education/work experience.
Experience in project management for demolition projects with hazardous contamination, following environmental (EPA and DTSC), waste management, EH&S, and QA requirements.
Experience developing and managing budgets, schedules, project scope documents, and coordinating project delivery, including team assignments and technical quality.
Proficiency with industry-recognized project management software and EVMS.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to take initiative and use sound judgment.
Excellent planning, prioritization, organizational, and time management skills to manage multiple projects.
Strong proposal development, presentation, and client relationship skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, collaboration skills, and interpersonal skills with a customer-focused approach.
Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
Project Manager Level 3 (in addition to Level 2): Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science/Chemistry, Geosciences, or professional certification in Construction or Project Management, AND 10+ years of relevant experience with at least 7 years in D&D, waste management, or construction facilities project management.
Experience leading and managing D&D activities using project management principles and controls; OR 14 years of combined education/professional experience.
Desired Qualifications: Valid professional license obtained by written examination to practice Architecture/Engineering/Geology in the State of California.
Project Management Professional (PMP) credential Extensive experience with Utility deactivation and relocation plans Characterization and abatement of hazardous building materials Profiling, management & dispositioning waste Highly Desired: Experience following DOE or NRC project management, EH&S, and QA requirements.
Extensive experience with DOE-equivalent EH&S regulations (10CFR835, 10CFR830, 10CFR851, 10CFR850, DOE O458.1).
Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
The Project Manager Level 2 position is expected to pay $144,000 - $177,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $128,412- $216,672 annually for the job classification of Z20.2.
The Project Manager Level 3 position is expected to pay $186,000 - $217,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $165,324 - $279,012 annually for the job classification of Z20.3.
Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule- a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
