The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program is seeking a dynamic and creative Deputy Director and Fellow to advance our research agenda at the intersection of energy security, transition, and geopolitics.
As Deputy Director and Fellow, you will collaborate with the program director and team to develop strategies that address the most pressing energy challenges of the 21st century. You will take a leadership role, ensuring the production of high-quality research outputs and the achievement of key programmatic goals. Your leadership will be instrumental in mentoring junior staff and fostering a culture of excellence.

The salary range for this position is $ 125,000 -$160,000  based on experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
Strategy and Research Leadership
• Provide strategic guidance for research projects from inception through completion, including idea creation, proposal development, research execution, and project management.
• Supervise junior research staff, ensuring the production and dissemination of impactful research products.
• Author and edit high-quality reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and policy analyses to advance research findings and objectives.
• Collaborate with the Program Director to identify and define new areas of research and public engagement.
Outreach and Engagement
• Serve as a prominent voice on energy and climate policy, promoting the program's analysis (including your own) to a diverse set of stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, journalists, and the public.
• Contribute to national and international energy conversations through participation in conferences, workshops, and donor engagements.
• Build and maintain a robust professional network, liaising with external experts, non-resident affiliates, peer organizations, and academic researchers.
• Conceive and lead events such as conferences, panels, roundtables, and podcasts to disseminate the program's research and insights.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE: • Experience: 6+ years of increasingly independent or responsible experience in public policy development and research within industry, analytical or research communities, or government. Supervisory experience is preferred, as is experience with bipartisan groups of policymakers or experts.
• Expertise: Respected authority with substantial knowledge and a robust network in energy or climate issues, with a particular interest in expertise related to geopolitics, trade, or energy markets. 
• Skills: Entrepreneurial mindset with a proactive approach to identifying challenges, setting priorities, and implementing policy-relevant solutions.
• Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills; proficient public speaker capable of engaging with media, industry, and government stakeholders.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS: This position will be based out of our Washington DC headquarters and is expected to be in-office 3+ days per week. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee working in an office environment.
