Overview
Job Summary
Responsible for administration of the diagnostic medical physics program for Atrium Health facilities. The diagnostic medical physicist provides physics testing services as required by the American College of Radiology, The Joint Commission, the North Carolina Radiation Protection Section, and other federal and state regulatory agencies. The diagnostic medical physicist works in conjunction with the Radiation Safety Officer to provide physics testing services to support accreditation, licensing, and quality assurance programs.
 
Essential Functions

Provides physics oversight and support for Atrium Health personnel radiation monitoring programs.

Investigates and reports incidents, noncompliance situations, and overexposures involving ionizing radiation, radioactive materials, or radiation sources to the Radiation Safety Officer.
Counsels pregnant workers and their supervisors regarding radiation safety and ALARA practices during the term of declared pregnancy.
Administers special dosimetry program for declared pregnant workers, ensuring timely reporting and review of monitoring results.

 
 Provides physics oversight and support for Atrium Health dose monitoring programs.

Calculates fetal dose from patient imaging procedures upon physician request.
Provides education and counseling to pregnant patients and referring physicians as appropriate.
Calculates patient doses upon physician request (Nuclear Medicine, PET, CT, and Diagnostic Radiology).
Performs CT protocol review and optimization in conjunction with the RSO, medical staff, and CT technical staff.

 
Performs and completes radiation shielding calculations and shielding plan review reports for diagnostic radiology installations, including radiographic, fluoroscopic, CT, Dental, Nuclear Medicine, PET, and other diagnostic modalities.

Completes shielding plan review calculations according to NCRP guidance, AAPM technical reports, and state and federal regulations.
Completes shielding evaluation surveys upon installation of diagnostic radiology equipment. 
Completes physics acceptance testing of new equipment as required.

 
Provides oversight and medical physics support to Atrium Health Radiology Departments including radiology equipment quality assurance programs.

Performs Radiology quality assurance and compliance test procedures in CHS facilities following TJC, AAPM, ACR, FDA and state guidelines and regulations.
Performs equipment acceptance testing of advanced modality imaging systems, including, but not limited to, CT, MRI, PET, Nuclear Medicine, Mammographic, Interventional Radiology, Cardiac Catheterization, and Ultrasound systems, in accordance with ACR technical standards, MQSA regulations, AAPM technical reports and guidelines, and state and federal regulations.
Provides medical physics services for MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, PET, Ultrasound, Mammography, and all imaging modality accreditation programs.

 
Provides physics services to Nuclear Medicine and PET imaging departments.

Performs quarterly audits and quality assurance testing for Nuclear Medicine and PET equipment.
Performs annual physics evaluations and testing of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT imaging systems.
Provides physics support and technical guidance for radiopharmaceutical therapy patients upon request.
Provides physics support and technical guidance to the liver microsphere therapy program.
Provides physics support and technical guidance for radiopharmaceutical therapy programs performed in Radiation Oncology (Lutathera, Xofigo, etc.).
Provides physics support and technical guidance for the MIBG high dose radioiodine therapy program at Levine Children's Hospital.

 
Supports Atrium Health/CMC Medical Emergency Response for area Nuclear Power Reactors and Emergency Management Agencies.

Responds to requests from the CMC Emergency Department for assistance involving radiation incidents.
Responsible for radiation safety aspects of nuclear accident drills conducted by the NRC, FEMA, or State/County EMD.   

 
Conducts Radiation Safety training/inservices for departments using ionizing radiation and radioactive material as prescribed or as requested/needed. Maintains documentation of training as required.
 
Physical Requirements
 
Work is performed in all Atrium Health facilities utilizing ionization radiation and radioactive material. Travel to Atrium Health facilities required.Education, Experience and Certifications

Master's Degree in Medical Physics or Health Physics required. Knowledge, training and experience commensurate with the responsibilities of the Atrium Health medical physics program required. Board certification by the American Board of Radiology in diagnostic radiology physics required; however, ABR Board Eligible in diagnostic radiology physics with successful completion of a CAMPEP approved residency will be considered. Experience in physics testing of advanced modality equipment required. Experience in physics testing in support of ACR accreditation required.  Knowledge and experience with personal computers, spreadsheets, data base management systems and word processors required.
