The Director, Lab Services supervises the Laboratory Services Department (EKG, EEG, Radiology). Oversees the day-to-day work of the technical staff in assuring reliable test results and liaison activities with outside laboratory contractors and contract radiologists.
Responsibilities A day in the life of a Director of Lab Services at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Supervises, coordinates and performs various clinical tasks, such as phlebotomy (in collaboration with Quest phlebotomy leadership), X-rays and EKGs, as needed.2. Acts as a liaison with outside laboratory contractors, contract radiologists, hospital units, department managers, and Pharmacy, maintaining effective working relationships.3. Develops, recommends and administers policies and procedures for all CLIA approved waived testing, such as glucometer use (testing).4. Maintains relevant data and records in regards to federal, state, local and JCAHO standards/requirements regarding waived testing.5. Ensures quality and effectiveness of waived testing performed. Develops, implements and monitors a system for quality control.6. Provides orientation, training and problem-solving assistance and reviews waived testing procedures on a routine basis to ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies, such as JCAHO, CLIA, etc.7. Responsible for Laboratory and imaging strategic planning and budget, to include increasing lab capabilities at Carrier Clinic8. Works collaboratively with clinical staff to ensure continuity and coordination of waived testing in regards to use in the care of the patient.9. Develops competencies and provides site training on Point of Care testing10. Manages lab supplies and ensures adequate supply of COVID 19 testing kits, Point of Care testing materials (e.g. finger test kids, glucometers)11. Coordinates with DTS/LIS new test builds, instrument interface validations and Epic results reporting accuracy.12. Maintains and verifies charge codes are in use and is responsible for requesting creation of new ones when appropriate.13. Works with Network VP of Lab Services on Lab device/supply contracts as well as Quest Lab Management Agreement related items.14. Evaluates personnel; counsels as appropriate. Interviews and hires new employment candidates. Orient new personnel to the department.15. Reviews test utilization reports from outside laboratory contractors to assure that tests are ordered appropriately.16. Oversees the Radiology Department's interaction with patients and staff to ensure quality and safe patient care services.17. Develops and implements policies and procedures in accordance with regulatory standards such as JCAHO, OSHA, Department of Health and the Sharp Safety Law.18. Investigates outbreaks, develops responsible plans of action, reports communicable diseases in accordance with local, state and CDC criteria.19. Maintains optimal cost effective delivery of services with accuracy, validity and reliability.20. Evaluates, recommends and purchases department supplies. 21. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.22. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Bachelor's in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology.2. Minimum of 5 years as medical technologist or medical surgical nurse (RN).3. Minimum 1 year experience in Point-of-Care Testing oversight and management.4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.5. Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License. 2. American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification.
