Director, Meetings and Conventions About the Organization: Professional association located in Bethesda MD seeks a Director of Meetings and Conventions. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) represents more than 24,000 members and has a staff of 30 and an annual operating budget of $10 million. NASP is a 501(c)(6) membership organization that represents school psychology and supports the work of school psychologists to enhance the learning and mental health of all children and youth. In addition to the ongoing work of a member-service professional association, NASP is focused on three strategic goals: addressing the critical shortages in school psychology, promoting universal implementation of NASP practice standards, and advancing social justice. About the Position: The NASP Director of Meetings and Conventions reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for all aspects of the association's annual convention as well as 10–15 smaller meetings throughout the year. The annual convention has a budget of over $2 million, ~5,000 attendees, and ~1,200 educational sessions, including a virtual component.
The director is responsible for budget design and oversight, RFPs, site selection, contract negotiations with convention centers, hotels, speakers, vendors (i.e. general service contractor, audio/visuals, computer rental/Internet connectivity, registration and housing management, temporary staff, security, transportation, office equipment, copy services, shipping, sign language interpreters, entertainment, floral, etc.), catering, exhibits, convention literature, and all convention logistics as well as on-site management and post-event assessment.
These tasks are accomplished through ongoing collaboration with NASP leadership, Convention Committee members, staff, and external partners; engaging in organized implementation and innovative thinking; and effective communication.
Requirements: NASP seeks a professional candidate with strategic thinking, leadership, communication, interpersonal, and independent work skills, and a willingness to make a long-term commitment to the association. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 8 years of experience working as a meetings industry professional in a departmental leadership role. Additionally, demonstrated leadership experience, strong written and oral communications skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively, in a high-functioning, fast paced work environment are required. Holding the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential is strongly preferred.
