Assists with program for orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.
In partnership with the Safety Officer and Infection Preventionist provides oversight for Emergency Preparedness program and activities.
Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures for the emergency department; works with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
Supervises all nursing activities related to patient care and sets standards for accurate reporting and recording of patient's symptoms, reactions and progress.
Organizes patient care and ensures continuity of care based on knowledge of clinical nursing needs of patients.
Assists nursing personnel in assessing patient/family status to plan nursing care.
Serve as a resource person to other departments.
Serves on organization and community committees as required.
Participates in facility sponsored events as a representative of the organization.
Assigns and provides adequate time for personnel within the department to attend required training and/or continuing education to maintain and/or update competence.
Provides a department specific orientation process to all staff members focusing on patient care, job responsibilities, infection control, safety, health care management, new equipment, and other needs.
Turns in to supervisor a completed and signed department orientation packet for each new employee within ninety days of employee's start date.
Monitors departmental and employee compliance with OSHA Standards and Environment of Care policies and procedures - safety, life safety, security, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, equipment and utilities.
Follows through with corrective action in areas that are not being complied with.
Ensures departmental and employee compliance with Infection Control policies and procedures, blood and body fluid precautions and other pertinent policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Quality Responsible for safety and comfort of patients, health and safety of employees working in the emergency department.
Collaborates with senior leadership to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Utilizes and instructs staff on quality assurance standards and programs.
Assesses the developmental needs of patients from infant to geriatric and plan/adjust care, services, and instruction appropriately.
Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards.
Administers nursing care to patients as needed to maintain clinical skills, or to assess patient requirements.
Functions as staff nurse on designated shifts.
May assume role of patient advocate while respecting guidelines found in the Patient Bill of Rights.
Provides direction in educational and teaching efforts directed at patients and their families.
Fosters good public relations for emergency department, nursing and organization.
Adheres to personnel policies and procedures and communicates same to personnel within department.
Exhibits and promotes a positive attitude and outlook in the workplace and community.
Demonstrates behavior that is conducive to the professional operation of the organization.
Finance Assists in developing and maintaining the budget for the emergency department.
Evaluates and sets standards for equipment, and monitors utilization of equipment and supplies.
In accordance with the facility mission and vision, develops timely and clear goals for the department by ensuring allocation of sufficient staff, space, equipment, and other resources as necessary.
Communicates these goals to staff.
Continually assesses the needs of the department, gathers appropriate statistical data, and makes internal comparisons of performance, processes and outcomes.
Compares performance data to other hospitals to systematically improve performance.
Reports results quarterly to the ED Committee.
Growth Provides for professional growth and development of nursing staff by identifying educational needs, encourages continuing education, and evaluates effectiveness.
Facilitates staff meetings, continuing education programs, continuous quality improvement programs and quality assurance.
Completes mandatory education classes yearly, CPR, Fire, Safety, Disaster and Infection Control.
Understands and complies with universal blood and body fluid precautions.
Assumes responsibility for personal continuing education and developmental needs, attends meetings, workshops, and conventions to enrich personal knowledge, growth, and skill in providing clinical care to/for patients.
Is an active member of professional organization (s) pertinent to licensure.
Continually assesses the competence of all staff members through demonstration.
Encourages and supports self-development and learning for staff.
When applicable, implements programs to promote staff member's job-related advancement and educational goals.
RequirementsEducation: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
Licensure: Licensed and currently registered as a registered nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
Experience: Two to five years of clinical experience, preferably in a supervisory nursing position.
Experience in Emergency Services.
Experience in a rural setting is preferred.
Skills: Demonstrated leadership abilities; able to work under stressful situations; and possesses good oral and written communication skills.
Certifications: Current certification in BLS, ACLS, CALS with Trauma Module, and ENA certifications.
Maintenance: Maintain required licensure, registration, and/or certification as required.
