Job Description
The Director of Fabrication and Paint Operations is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the metal fabrication and paint/body departments. This role requires extensive knowledge of fabrication processes, bodywork, paint applications, production scheduling, and team leadership. The director will ensure the highest quality standards, efficient use of resources, and adherence to production schedules while maintaining a safe and collaborative work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:
Lead, mentor, and manage teams within the metal fabrication and paint/body departments, fostering a culture of excellence, safety, and teamwork.
Oversee workforce scheduling to ensure optimal allocation of staff and resources to meet production deadlines.
Collaborate with department heads and senior management to align production goals and strategies.
Production Oversight:
Direct all metal fabrication processes, including cutting, forming, welding, and assembly, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
Oversee the bodywork and paint preparation processes, ensuring attention to detail, surface preparation, and top-quality paint finishes.
Develop and maintain production schedules, ensuring timely completion of projects while balancing production capacity, material availability, and workforce capabilities.
Continuously assess and improve production processes to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
Quality Control:
Implement and maintain rigorous quality control procedures for all fabrication and paint/body activities, ensuring final products meet or exceed company and industry standards.
Conduct regular inspections of work in progress and completed vehicles to identify any areas of improvement or defects.
Ensure all finished vehicles reflect the classic restoration standards expected by the company and its customers.
Process Improvement:
Identify opportunities to streamline fabrication and paint/body processes to improve productivity and reduce costs without compromising quality.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including the adoption of new technologies and techniques in both metalwork and paint applications.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure all activities within the metal fabrication and paint/body departments comply with company safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment at all times.
Stay up-to-date with industry regulations and best practices, ensuring compliance across the board.
Budget & Resource Management:
Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring cost control and efficient use of materials and labor.
Coordinate with the procurement department to ensure timely sourcing of materials and equipment necessary for fabrication and paint/body processes.
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong understanding of production planning, resource allocation, and process optimization in a fabrication and paint/body setting.
Familiarity with classic vehicle restoration processes, materials, and techniques is highly desirable.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Knowledge of industry-standard safety and quality protocols.
Ability to work a minimum of 45 hours per week and up to 60, on call as needed.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to work.
Background check and pre-employment drug screening required.
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
Experience with modern fabrication tools, CNC equipment, and paint technology preferred.
Proficiency in production management software and tools.
Education and Experience
Minimum of 10 years of experience in metal fabrication and paint/body work, preferably within the automotive or classic vehicle restoration industry.
Proven track record in managing production schedules and leading diverse teams in a manufacturing environment.
Physical Demands (to include but not limited to)
Regular standing and walking on the shop floor to oversee fabrication and paint/body operations. This can include walking between different areas of the facility, often for extended periods of time.
Occasional lifting of materials or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs may be required, particularly when inspecting or assisting with certain tasks.
Regular bending, stooping, or kneeling may be necessary when inspecting vehicles or equipment at various stages of production or troubleshooting issues.
Occasional use of hands for tasks requiring fine motor skills, such as reviewing detailed work on vehicle body panels or paint surfaces.
Close visual inspection of metal fabrication, bodywork, and paint finishes for quality control purposes, often requiring a high level of detail and focus.
Clear verbal communication in a production environment, requiring the ability to listen and speak clearly while coordinating with teams and providing instructions.
Maintaining energy and focus during long working hours, particularly during peak production periods or when meeting tight deadlines.
Working in a production setting may expose the individual to dust, fumes, noise, and fluctuating temperatures, especially when in proximity to welding, painting, or machinery operations. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and respirators may be required at times.
