Position Summary: The Director of Finance and Accounting is a pivotal leadership role responsible for managing Literacy Minnesota's financial operations. This position ensures financial stability, compliance, and sustainability while supporting the organization's mission to provide transformative learning opportunities, spark innovation in literacy, and mobilize change. The Director will work closely with the President and other members of the executive leadership team to integrate financial practices with organizational strategies, enhance efficiency, and promote an inclusive work environment aligned with Literacy Minnesota's values of lifelong learning, justice, self-determination, equity, and innovation.
Work environment consists of a typical office or home environment. Time spent on the computer is approximately 60%. Ability to be multi-site and travel within the metro and occasionally within the U.S. Occasional longer work days (10-12 hour days). Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time position and is eligible for health, dental, vision, PTO, 401(k) with match (see benefits document on website career page for additional insight). The compensation range for this position is $80,000-$95,000 per year. Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Strategy: Develop and implement financial strategies that support organizational objectives and operational efficiency. Oversee the preparation and management of budgets, financial forecasts, and financial reports. Provide strategic recommendations to the President based on financial analysis and projections. Ensure alignment of financial strategies with Literacy Minnesota's mission, vision, and values as well as the strategic plan. Hold staff and organization accountable to employing an equity and inclusion lens in our financial decisions and priorities. Finance and Accounting Management Lead and manage all financial operations, including accounting, payroll, budgeting, auditing, and reporting. Examine and scrutinize policies and practices around financial matters to ensure equity, inclusion and anti-racist practices are embedded. Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and GAAP. Oversee the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors, and prepare necessary documentation. Monitor cash flow, accounts, and other financial transactions to ensure financial stability. Systems and Process Integration Collaborate with the Director of Operations to integrate financial systems with organizational processes. Implement and maintain robust financial management software and tools. Identify opportunities to enhance financial processes and internal controls for greater efficiency and accuracy. Team Management and Development Supervise and mentor finance and accounting team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth. Develop training programs and resources to enhance financial literacy and competency across the organization. Promote a positive and inclusive work environment in line with the organization's values of lifelong learning, justice, self-determination, equity, and innovation. Collaboration and Communication Work closely with the President and other executive team members to support strategic initiatives. Communicate financial information effectively to stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, senior management, and staff.Collaborate with department heads to ensure financial practices support programmatic goals and operational needs. Required Qualifications: Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management, preferably in a non-profit organization. 3+ years of supervising and leading teams. Capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect to staff both individually and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability; ability to develop and empower leaders from the bottom up and lead from the top down; strong commitment to follow-through; and high emotional intelligence. Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational planning. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and financial analysis. High-level proficiency with accounting software, preferably Sage Intacct. Proven leadership and team management skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex financial information clearly. High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation. Ability to work effectively in an organization that has recognized its own issues related to equity, and is seeking to be more representative of the community. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic groups. Well-organized, self-disciplined, decisive with an ability to balance the "big picture, long-term view" with a hands-on, day-to-day focus. Outstanding written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Experience in working with Boards of Directors and other key influencers in a nonprofit organization. Experience with integrating and synthesizing Payroll Software (ADP preferred) and CRMs (Saleforce preferred) software such ADP, Salesforce, etc with financial and accounting software Sage. Preferred Qualifications: CPA certification or advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPA). Experience with financial management software and systems integration. Demonstrated commitment to values of lifelong learning, justice, self-determination, equity, and innovation. Prior experience in an organization with multi-program settings.
