About New York Theatre Workshop: Since our founding in 1979 by Stephen Graham, New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) has fostered a community of adventurous audiences and visionary theatre makers, bringing them together to deepen our shared understanding of the world around us. We nurture pioneering new writers like Jeremy O. Harris and Celine Song and bring them into conversation with powerhouse playwrights like Ayad Akhtar and Amy Herzog. We empower inimitable auteurs like Rachel Chavkin and Lileana Blain-Cruz and lift up emerging directors like Awoye Timpo and Sammi Cannold. We continue to maintain decades-long commitments to artists like Caryl Churchill and Dael Orlandersmith, who have shaped our very understanding of what theatre can be.
Our productions have reached hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, and the work we've nurtured has gone on to move millions more uptown and around the world. Seven of our productions have transferred to Broadway, and in 2019, our work was honored with 16 Tony Awards nominations—including 8 Tonys for Best Musical winner HADESTOWN—and Heidi Schreck was a Pulitzer finalist for WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME. In 2020, SLAVE PLAY garnered the most Tony nominations for a play—the most in Broadway history! Our work has been recognized with a Pulitzer Prize and numerous Tony, Obie, and Drama Desk Awards, along with the Lilly Awards for our decades-long commitment to gender equality.
But that's not what we're proudest of. We take the greatest satisfaction from the community we've built and the perspective-shifting experiences we've delivered along the way. We are thrilled to have returned to East 4th Street and are in the midst of preparing for our second exciting season back in-person. About the Team: Led by the Director of Development, our development team includes six full-time employees, one part-time employee, and a Development Fellow. Together the team oversees all aspects of fundraising for this Off-Broadway theatre. The Director of Institutional Giving reports directly to the Director of Development, co-manages the Development Associate, and works closely with every member of the development team.
About the Position: New York Theatre Workshop seeks a Director of Institutional Giving with a track record of serving as a frontline fundraiser to maximize support from a portfolio of foundation, corporate, and government funders. Responsibilities include:
Serve as frontline fundraiser for a portfolio of foundation and government prospects to secure annual and multiyear gifts to support NYTW's artistic and education programs, general operating, and special initiatives.Build and steward key relationships with funders by participating in meetings, phone calls, and events while serving as the main point of contact.Work closely with the Development Director to develop and execute a strategic multiyear foundation and government fundraising plan to achieve and exceed annual goals.Manage and maintain a calendar of proposal and report deadlines and ensure timely submission to funders.Prepare senior leadership for meetings with current and prospective funders by assembling summaries and briefs and attending meetings.Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and prospective institutional donors with the goal of increasing funding and expanding the pool of support. Research new sources of foundation, corporate, and government support.Create compelling LOIs, proposals, reports, acknowledgment letters, and general correspondence, ensuring all materials are of the highest quality and all deadlines are met.Collect, review, and organize supplemental documentation (budgets, timelines, images, etc.) as needed and requested to support grant proposals, reports, and other donor requests.Co-manage the Development Associate and work with the Development Fellow as they support the Director of Institutional Giving in funder stewardship, acknowledgment letters, grant applications and reporting, and prospect research.Work with the finance team to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial information including budget submissions, while spearheading the financial storytelling for all proposals.Be the central connector for collecting and aggregating reporting information by establishing relationships with co-workers across NYTW's multiple departments.About You: You are committed to an equitable and inclusive community.You have a passion for theatre and a desire to build meaningful connections between adventurous theatergoers and visionary artists.You are committed to open and honest communication.You build strong, collaborative relationships with fellow staff, Board members, and funders alike.You are an accomplished writer and can craft a compelling and artful argument.You are an expert project manager and are good at balancing competing priorities.You are detail-oriented and take pride in creating and participating in efficient processes.You are excited about digging into data and fearless in mastering new data systems. Benefits include employer-paid medical, dental, life insurance, and paid time off. Please note that NYTW is in a hybrid work environment with Development professionals in the office a minimum of three days a week and attending all in-person events. In-office days and hours must be flexible given our robust calendar of events. This position will require onsite, in-person activity, so the applicant should intend to reside in the greater NYC area.
