Makena is seeking an Outdoor Pursuits (OP) Director to join the Outdoor Pursuits Department.
The Outdoor Pursuits Director will set the standards by which the Outdoor Pursuits department will function, leading, teaching, and supervising staff to provide exceptional experiences and memories while ensuring utmost safety for members, guests, and prospects during their visits.
The Director of Outdoor Pursuits is responsible for all activities at Makena Golf & Beach Club. The OP Director is responsible for coordinating, developing, planning, and implementing innovative programs and is fully accountable for the successful operation and safety of the OP program.
Key Responsibilities: Operations & Team Management: Lead the Outdoor Pursuits team, including hiring, training, and performance management, ensuring policies and procedures reflect the highest standards of operation and member service. Develop a team and facilities that meet business objectives, supporting the delivery of exceptional member experiences and overall property operations. Ensure staff compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and DLNR regulations for marine and land activities, promoting safety in all operations. Oversee staff scheduling, including daily line-ups and coverage for all shifts, activities, and events, ensuring operational efficiency. Coordinate with third-party vendors to maintain safety standards during water-based activities. Manage departmental administrative tasks, including maintaining up-to-date equipment inventory, budget oversight, and loss prevention efforts. Maintain accurate reports on departmental activities, safety measures, and member feedback to continuously improve services. Recreational & Activity Management: Oversee all activities and areas including but not limited to the beach area, watersports, pool, kids club, racquet sports, park sports, field sports, and mountain sports. Innovate and develop new activity offerings for members while creating safe and engaging ways for staff to participate. Continuously review and enhance member experience, ensuring all recreational programs provide a fun, safe, and memorable environment. Member Engagement & Experience: Act as a key point of contact for members, encouraging participation in sports and recreation. Assist with member requests, including equipment setup, food and drink orders. Oversee kids' camp programs and organize special events, ensuring a family-friendly experience for all members and guests. Maintain a positive, professional atmosphere in all member-facing areas. Staff Leadership & Development: Lead by example, embodying company values and promoting a positive working environment. Provide ongoing staff training and development. Monitor staff performance, delivering regular feedback and implementing progressive discipline when necessary. Foster a harmonious team dynamic by organizing team outings and addressing any issues. Financial Oversight: Manage the department's budget, ensuring accurate financial reporting and adherence to budgets. Liaise with the procurement team to maintain relationships with suppliers and control department costs. Implement cost-saving initiatives that enhance member experience without compromising on safety or service quality. Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure that all activities and operations comply with company health and safety standards. Oversee the proper use of PPE by all staff and manage the safe disposal of hazardous materials. Monitor and document all health and safety measures. Qualifications: Prior experience and proven success in a leadership role in the hospitality, service, fitness, or recreation industry is strongly preferred. Minimum five (5) years of experience in a 4-5 star resort setting or in the luxury related field. Minimum three (3) years' experience of staff supervision is required. Expert knowledge of indoor and outdoor recreational activities, sports/fitness programs, and marine environment. AED, First Aid, and CPR certifications. Additional Requirements: Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Demonstrates respect for and appreciation of Hawaiian values, history, and culture. Ability to stay calm and focused during busy times. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred. Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
