Job SummaryUnder general direction of the VP, Clinical Services, Chief Pharmacy Officer, the Director of Pharmacy is accountable for administrative/management, operational, and clinical activities at the St. Mary's and St. Francis campuses.
This responsibility will encompass all aspects of operations, budgeting, planning, organization, staffing, and evaluation, as well as the supervision of significant number of staff and clinical pharmacists.
Responsibilities include:
MEDICAL CARE AND PATIENT RESPONSIVENESSRepresents the Department in interaction with Health System personnel, community groups, other healthcare organizations and through active participation on committees, task forces, etc., when appropriate or as assigned.Coordinates problem-solving efforts with patient care providers to assure standards for service and quality.Responsive to patients, parents, visitors, and caregivers by assuring that services are provided in a timely manner with courtesy and compassion within a positive environmental setting.Monitors the departmental quality assurance program and facilitates response/solution to quality assurance issues.Assures continuity of department operations by coordinating the technical/administrative support.Develops departmental policies/procedures and goals/objectives that are consistent with those of the Health System.COMMUNICATIONMeets regularly with all department members and provides information and updates on Health System/Department activities.Exercises sound judgment in advising Administrators, Department Managers, etc.
on key issues.Provides timely written reports that reflect clarity, purpose, and as appropriate, recommendations and/or alternatives.Maintains current knowledge of technical/professional field, the healthcare industry, Health System activities and contributes the same in discussions at a variety of forums.STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYEE RELATIONSEstablishes departmental standards and assures that employees are informed of these and of the expectation of compliance.Administers the management/administrative and personnel policies of the Health System in a consistent and uniform manner.Managing Relationships: Managing Relationships include relationships with patients, subordinates, peers and supervisors.
Build and maintain relationships with others based on mutual respect and trust.
Foster collaborative decision-making among staff with diverse backgrounds and interests.
Work effectively toward solutions that consider the needs of all parties when conflict arises.
Provide regular updates on program process and work with appropriate people to minimize risks and resolve problems.Responsible for updating employee job descriptions that reflect current job responsibilities and to monitor employees' work performance against such criteria; conduct timely formal performance appraisal of employees.Establishes a work environment wherein training opportunities exist for personnel to enhance their skills.Provides guidance and counseling to personnel in a manner that promotes teamwork and facilitates the resolutions of conflict among staff.Selects and hires new employees and also recommends employee terminations as appropriate.Recruitment and Retention: Ensure that all job postings/requisitions incorporate the language 'or equivalent combination of education and experience' in the statement of minimum qualifications and thus not exclude otherwise qualified and often diverse candidates.
Develop selection committees, when appropriate, for a departmental position, that are diverse in their composition.LEADERSHIPServes as a role model for personnel through management practices of honesty, integrity and fairness.Promotes teamwork by encouraging personnel participation in departmental activities and by enhancing their awareness and knowledge of the Health System's objectives.Maintains an open-door policy with demonstrated responsiveness, flexibility, and support of employees.Participates actively with other department managers in addressing Health System-wide issues and/or interdepartmental coordination.Demonstrates sound approach to decision-making with appropriate analysis before-hand.PLANNINGIdentifies resource needs, operational problems, shifts in technological-treatment trends and develops appropriate plans to address.Assesses service demand and facilitates staffing and/or service adjustments, space utilization, equipment functioning, etc.
; coordinates the support services of other departments and/or external agencies.Establishes and evaluates work-system designs and standards and protocols to enhance departmental productivity with input from employees.Develops long-term plan of department operations, services and programs.FINANCIAL MANAGEMENTDevelops an annual operational budget and capital budget; monitors and controls expenditure levels to assure compliance with approved budget and submits quarterly performance reports to administration.Assesses departmental productivity and appropriately revises workflow systems to enhance efficiency in providing services.Participates in Health System-wide cost containment activities and promotes same among department staff by establishment of specific cost containment objectives.Assists administration in identifying possible new funding sources and revenue enhancement opportunities.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $187,300 - $454,700 (Annual Rate).

These services include, but are not limited to: drug procurement, storage, and security; safe accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the UCSF Health System; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs.
The Department encompasses with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D.
curriculum, research, and public service.
The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Department of Pharmaceutical Services share its philosophy of pharmaceutical care.
Required QualificationsDoctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) or equivalent trainingMinimum of seven years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a Medical Center/Hospital PharmacyMinimum of five years management experience or demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills in a Medical Center pharmacy or an equivalent combination of education and experiencePost graduate training In Pharmacy Practice or Hospital Administration, or equivalent experienceRegistered Pharmacist in the State of California within 6 months of hireMust be in good standing with the California State Board of PharmacyAdvanced knowledge and applied background in Pharmacy practiceKnowledge of industry best practices and technology to optimize the use of medication to treat patientsStays updated on pharmacy regulations, drug products, and developments in research and designAdvanced knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, Health System, and UC policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatmentKnowledge of all pharmacy federal and state laws and regulationsSkills in employee development to grow assigned manager and supervisor leadership skillsStrategic abilities to collaborate with senior management on setting objectivesProven budgeting and financial management skillsProven ability to set goals and manage the implementation process for initiativesKnowledge of organizational structure and critical thinking skills to perform gap analysis and identify improvements in workflowKnowledge of available information technology software in the pharmaceutical fieldDemonstrated skills to organize, simplify and increase efficiency of workflows and protocols while maintaining standards and complianceMust have excellent interpersonal skills to interface with a variety of personnel, including physicians, nursing staff, other healthcare providers, pharmaceutical manufacturer representatives, wholesalers, peers, patients, senior management, assigned staff, other administrators and coordinate Pharmacy activities across functionsStrong problem-solving skills to evaluate complex or new issues and identify options for resolution when no precedent exists.
