Operational Resilience is the ability of an organization to withstand, adapt to, and recover from unexpected disruptions such as cyberattacks, natural disasters or technical failures. It extends beyond business continuity by addressing both internal and external risks that could impact the delivery of products or services. Operational Resilience involves anticipating potential disruptions, strategizing preventive measures, and ensuring the organization can continue serving its customers without interruption during such events.
Operational Resilience program is part of the Business Continuity Management (BCM) team in Global Services Group (GSG) at American Express. This team works with colleagues across the Company to implement and oversee resilience, continuity, and response capabilities to safeguard employees, customers, and products and services. The team coordinates planning and preparedness for potential service disruptions and other crises. The team also coordinates global or regional crisis responses, monitors developing issues while assessing organizational preparedness, and drives after-action crisis analyses and reporting for senior leaders.
As the Director of Operational Resilience, you will lead a team of professionals to design and implement the operational resilience program across the enterprise, to be compliant with interagency guidance on operational resilience. In addition, you will also be responsible for crisis monitoring and reporting for potential operational disruptions and supporting crisis response for actual disruptions.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the development and implementation of the Operational Resilience framework, including: Create and maintain policies, procedures, and standards
Establish and maintain the Critical Business Services (CBSs) including inter-dependency mapping to locations, people, third parties, systems and critical data elements, and defining impact tolerance levels for potential outages
Conduct scenario testing of the Critical Business Services in collaboration with the CBS owner and related operational programs, such as Information Security, Information Technology, Operational Risk and Third-Party Risk Management
Support Operational Resilience reporting to required committees and AXP Board
Partner with operational resilience teams in international markets to ensure consistent implementation of operational resilience framework
Stay updated on evolving global regulatory requirements around Operational Resilience
Coach and lead a team of colleagues to deliver impactful results
Lead with an external perspective – benchmark AXP Operational Resilience program to peer companies.
Lead the development and maintenance of crisis monitoring dashboard and support enterprise crisis response
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience and Background:
5+ years' experience in Risk Management and/or Business Continuity
Strong understanding of American Express products, services, and organizational structure
Strong problem-solving skills; ability to see the big picture with attention given to critical details
Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities under pressure
Familiarity with Operational Resilience regulatory requirements (e.g., SR 20-24, DORA, UK FCA regulations) is preferred
Bachelor's degree required
Leadership Skills:
Proven people leader who can build, inspire, develop, and coach a team
Excellent relationship, collaboration, and presentation skills with ability to interact and influence leaders across all levels and teams in a matrixed organization
Self-confident with a strong sense of integrity and the ability and willingness to challenge and be challenged
· Ability to communicate key risks to colleagues, business partners, and senior leaders
Preferred Qualifications:
MBA or advanced degree preferred
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
