Description/Duties

The current vacancy is in the Energy Resources Department and will be filled at either Electrical Engineer I, Electrical Engineer II, or Senior Electrical Engineer level. This recruitment will also be used to establish a Citywide list which may be used to fill possible future vacancies in other departments.


First review of applications will be Monday, October 21, 2024, and then weekly thereafter as needed. Electrical Engineer I ($65,142.06 - $97,620.22 Annually)

An Electrical Engineer I is an entry-level position which uses on-the-job training to develop skills and abilities to perform technical engineering tasks required for the City's electric distribution operations or Engineering Department's Design Group.
Under the direction of an Electrical Engineer II, Senior Electrical Engineer, or Supervising Engineer, the Electrical Engineer I will assist with tasks by applying knowledge from academic studies, internships, and on-the-job training to size transformers; calculate electrical loads; determine conductor sizes; determine proper voltage configurations; calculate voltage losses for various conductor sizes, types, and lengths; determine proper sizing and placement of distribution poles, equipment, and facilities; perform drafting and design work utilizing GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and AutoCad to produce neat, precise, and well-balanced drawings for the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground, primary and secondary distribution circuits and facilities for the electric system.
In addition, the employee in this class may assist in short- and long-term planning and preparing special studies on the distribution systems and determining operational requirements for electrical loads utilizing electric modeling and analytical tools.
This class will assist to define electric system improvement priorities; prepare cost estimates; provide budgetary input related to planning, operations, and the function of short- and long-term design of the electric distribution system; and develop material specifications for all materials used in the City's electric distribution system.
This class performs related duties as required.

The Electrical Engineer I will learn to perform specialized engineering and technical work related to the planning, design, and operation of the City's electric distribution system.
The Electrical Engineer I classification differs from the Electrical Engineer II by the latter having significant experience in electric distribution operations, GIS, distribution system modeling/design, and registration as an Engineer-In-Training in a state that is acceptable to the State of Arizona, enabling performance of more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments, with minimal direct supervision.
Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Electrical Engineer II upon meeting the following criteria-based promotion requirements: three years as an Electrical Engineer I (or equivalent work experience), Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, and a demonstrated ability to work with other technical employees engaged in drafting and design work on the electric distribution system, which includes overhead and underground circuits and duct back systems.
This class may be supervised by the Electrical Engineer II, Senior Electrical Engineer, or Supervising Engineer who reviews work through reports, conferences, meetings, inspections, and results achieved.
This class is FLSA exempt-professional.


Electrical Engineer II ($83,150.70 - $124,603.65 Annually)
An Electrical Engineer II performs professional, electric engineering work in the Electric Engineering Section of the Electric Utility Unit or in the Engineering Design group within the Engineering Department.
The employee in this class works with other technical employees engaged in drafting and design work on the electric distribution system, which includes overhead and underground circuits and duct bank systems.
In addition, the employee in this class may assist in preparing special studies on the distribution systems and operational requirements for electrical loads.
This class performs related duties as required.


The Electrical Engineer II class is the journey-level classification within the professional electrical engineering career ladder.
The Electrical Engineer II class differs from the Senior Electrical Engineer class by the latter having registration as a Professional Engineer and performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments, with minimal direct supervision.
In addition, an Electrical Engineer II will direct and review the work performed by lower-level engineers and technicians (by assignment).


Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Electrical Engineer upon meeting the following criteria-based promotion requirements: five or more years' experience with electric systems engineering, and a minimum of six months supervisory experience and registration as a Professional Engineer (Electrical) in the state of Arizona.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Electrical Engineer, Supervising Engineer, or Deputy Director - Electric who reviews work through reports, conferences, meetings, inspections, and results achieved.
Employees may progress to this classification by non-competitive promotion upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements.
This class is FLSA exempt-professional.


Senior Electrical Engineer ($101,083.84 - $151,478.50 Annually)

Employees in this class perform the full range of professional engineering tasks.
In addition, a Senior Electrical Engineer may direct and review the work performed by lower-level engineers and technicians.
Assignments are broad in scope and require the use of independent judgment and initiative in making technical decisions of considerable difficulty.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Energy Resources Program Manager or the Supervising Engineer who reviews work through reports, conferences, meetings, inspections, and the evaluation of overall results achieved.
Employees may progress to this classification by non-competitive promotion upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements.

Electrical Engineer I Minimum Qualifications Required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, preferably with coursework in power systems concepts.

Special Requirement.
Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.


Substance Abuse Testing. Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.


Preferred/Desirable Qualifications.
Some (6 months - 1 year) experience in electrical engineering, computer modeling (or related work with an electric utility) is preferred.
This experience may include interning as or working directly for an electric utility or operation managing transmission and primary distribution systems.
Experience using AutoCAD.


Electrical Engineer II Minimum Qualifications Required.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
Considerable (3 - 5 years) experience in electric systems engineering, transmission, and primary distribution systems, or related field.


Special Requirements. Certification as Engineer-In-Training (EIT) is required prior to promotion or hire date.
Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.

Senior Electrical Engineer Minimum Qualifications Required. Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Extensive (5+ years) experience with electric systems engineering which includes some (6 months - 1 year) supervisory experience.


Special Requirements. Registration as a Professional Engineer is required by application date.
Must possess a valid class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.
