Position Overview Olson Engineering requires an Electrical Engineer with prior experience performing load flow, motor starting, coordination, arc flash and area classification studies in chemical and petrochemical plant settings to work in one of the Olson Engineering offices on an array of engineering projects.
The Electrical Engineer will perform engineering tasks independently but will receive support from other OE Electrical Engineers when needed. OE Engineers are responsible for providing for all engineering needs of a project for his/her respective discipline and will be the expert project resource for best practices, engineering standards, and technical requirements. The Engineer should also be willing to provide mentoring to other engineers and routinely review and provide engineering approval for design packages.
The Engineer will support and provide input to the design team to develop design documents and drawings as required, including equipment layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams and other installation drawings.
Responsibilities and Duties Engineers are expected to:
Perform in a team environment. Be proactive regarding Safety. BS or MS in electrical engineering is required. PE license is a plus. 5+ years of experience required. Have a strong working knowledge of typical power system configurations and operation. Specify and requisition feeder conductors, breakers, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, overcurrent protection and other electrical equipment for power distribution applications. Perform various power studies (load flow, short circuit, motor starting, arc flash, protection, coordination, battery sizing) and develop assessment reports. Perform area classification studies and direct designers in the creation of area classification drawings. Direct designers in the development of electrical design packages for projects. Frequently take field visits to plant or refinery-type facilities. Learn company and client policies and apply them to daily tasks. Display willingness and judgement to make decisions. Mentor junior designers and engineers, where possible. Coordination with the Project Manager and Project Engineer will be required for ongoing project reporting and project development support. Education/Knowledge Experience Five (5) or more years of cumulative relevant experience. Experience in the selection, specification and requisitioning of industrial electrical equipment. Experience performing studies using ETAP and SKM. Lead Engineer experience a plus. Education An engineering degree from a four-year accredited university is required; Electrical preferred. Skills Working knowledge of ETAP and SKM PTW (Power Tools for Windows) software. Applicants should be familiar with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in electrical engineering and design. Strong electrical power distribution design skills. Experience in vendor selection, including technical evaluations. Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must. Experience with project estimating is a positive. Ability to develop a scope of work and specify electrical equipment. MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Ability to perform assignments within budget and meet strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
