VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Electrical (D427) performs design engineering activities for electrical components and systems used in the propulsion plant for VIRGINIA Class submarines in construction at the Electric Boat shipyard and technology insertions for future VIRGINIA Class blocks of ships (e.g. Subsea and Seabed Warfare). Engineers work in a fast paced, multi-discipline environment, and interface with other engineering disciplines, senior management, suppliers and customers on a frequent basis. Technologies that are supported by this department include power distribution, power electronics, systems integration, integration of microprocessor control systems, and integration of copper based and fiber optic based serial communications systems. D427 is looking for detail oriented, highly motivated individuals that have ability to understand and learn the hardware and software designs of the power electronic inverters and converters. Specific responsibilities for the position will include, but are not limited to:
Component engineering tasks include development of technical specifications, functional requirements derived from overall system requirements, creation of component test procedures, and review of vendor design deliverables Collaborating with government prime contractors on development of design changes and improvements to power conversion equipment Evaluating vendor hardware and software design reports to help ensure compliance with requirements Vendor Management and oversight for program and technical product development Managing successful integration with shipboard arrangements and all interfacing electrical and mechanical systems Supporting integration of PCM design changes into the VIRGINIA electric plant. This includes supporting compatibility testing at the compatibility test facility. Reviewing interfacing ship design documentation such as component and system technical manuals Required:
Knowledge of power electronic devices, inverter and converter conversion circuits, switching pulse width modulation techniques, and voltage/current feedback regulation controllers Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent 5+ years' experience Internal candidates must be from outside operations (Casciano/Gabriel) Preferred, but not required:
Experience planning and executing complex projects and operations Experience with component engineering and system integration of power conversion equipment Experience authoring technical dispositions in calculations, white papers, recommendation letters, test procedures, test reports, construction/design change packages, component technical manuals, etc Knowledge of grounded and ungrounded power distribution systems, preferably shipboard S. Navy experience with electrical or electronics background Qualified as a nuclear plant operator (EOOW/EWS certified) Academic coursework in power systems Experience working in a commercial or Naval shipyard
