New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit This position is located in CDOT's Region 4 Sterling Engineering Residency. This residency provides project design, construction and materials support to Sterling and the surrounding areas. It ensures that projects which improve and maintain the transportation system within the Region are designed and constructed in a safe and cost effective manner, including materials utilized in the projects. About the  Position
As an Engineering/Physical Sciences Assistant II (EPSA II), you will assist with design, construction, and materials testing for transportation projects. This includes design review and support, construction inspection, testing of materials incorporated into projects, assuring compliance of plans and specifications, and determining the quantities for interim progress payments.
You will assist in the design of construction plans by automated drafting, gathering and checking of project quantities, and geometrics. This position performs routine materials testing and inspection, including collecting test materials, running appropriate tests, and conducting analyses. Complex testing and inspection will be done under the guidance of an Engineering Technician or an Engineer.
Your duties and responsibilities  will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assist with the visual inspections of contractor's work, materials used, and methods employed by the contractor to confirm compliance with project plans and specifications; Provide information so the project engineer can complete all documentation in accordance with the CDOT Construction Manual; Assist with routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data; Assist with collecting field measurements that will be used to generate pay quantities for contractor's work; Assist with the execution physical tests, as per the Materials Manual, on materials to be incorporated into a project to conform and comply with the plans and specifications; Gather and document results of physical tests and materials certification for incorporation into the project records; Conduct tests such as gradations, asphalt content, air and slump, proctors and the like to ensure conformance with the specifications; Utilize computer software programs relevant to design and construction of projects, and for receiving and transmitting inter-departmental communications, including Microsoft Suite, Google, OpenRoads, SiteManager, LIMS, Ashpalt03; Check documentation and calculations using appropriate manuals as guidelines for standardization;  Learn to review preliminary project design plans and documentation using appropriate manuals to ensure completeness, accuracy and constructability of design, quantity verifications and deficiencies; Assist with documenting the quantities for inclusion in the project records; Assist in Project Finals by checking all 266's, 305's, Contract Modification Orders (CMO's) and completing the "As Built" construction plans;  Verify all materials certifications as complete and valid, and test results are complete for materials finals documentation on assigned projects; Learn to complete field surveys for compiling field data to be incorporated into the design of transportation facilities, transfer collected data to computers by interfacing with computer programs and edit and translate the data into a usable format for the design phase of construction; Inspect road and bridge construction projects for compliance with the project plans and specifications. Other job duties as assigned. Work Environment: Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday  After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work depending on the current work load Approximately 50% spent in the field, 50% spent in the office Work days/hours may change depending on the project Travel is required throughout the state for project meetings, field inspections and training Occasional overnight travel is required Required to operate CDOT vehicles Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND One year of full-time experience related to the duties of the position in construction, design, inspection, materials testing, and/or documentation.  Substitution Completion of engineering, mathematics, or other relevant coursework from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  Please Note: The required experience must be substantiated within the work experience section of your application. Preferred Qualifications The exceptional applicant will be an experienced engineering assistant and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills; Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical and written data; Experience working effectively in both independent and team situations; Strong commitment to safety; Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment; Experience ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, laws, rules and regulations; Passion for safety; Skilled in the use of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel), Google Applications and Gmail, SAP, Trns-Port, and the ability to quickly learn new software.
