Schedule: Full-time, 12 months per year, 10 hours per day, 4 days per week (Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., possible nights and weekends).

For more details, view the complete job description: Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Regulatory Compliance: Ensures adherence to City, state, and federal environmental health and safety laws across programs like pretreatment, FOG, NPDES, MS4, and landfill operations.
Field Testing & Sampling: Schedules and conducts field tests, collects samples (wastewater, stormwater, groundwater, etc.
), and ensures proper sampling methods and protocols.
Site Inspections: Performs comprehensive inspections at commercial, industrial, and residential sites, including evaluating environmental risks and ensuring proper storage of hazardous chemicals.
Violation Investigation: Investigates violations related to stormwater and wastewater discharge, enforcing relevant regulations.
Data Management: Updates databases for compliance tracking, inputs violations, and generates reports.
Report Preparation: Prepares written reports and maintains records per City regulations; assists with regulatory compliance submissions.
Equipment Operation: Calibrates and operates specialized monitoring equipment for wastewater and landfill gas.
Collaboration & Communication: Works with regulatory agencies, explains regulations to customers, and responds to public inquiries.
Post-Closure Landfill: Inspects closed landfill sites in coordination with local and state agencies.
This role combines fieldwork, data management, and regulatory enforcement to ensure environmental safety compliance.
Positions at the Environmental Compliance Inspector I level may perform some duties and responsibilities in a learning capacity.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.
Experience: Environmental Compliance Inspector I: One (1) year of responsible experience performing environmental compliance inspections and/or monitoring.
Environmental Compliance Inspector II: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience performing inspections, sampling, and compliance monitoring related to assigned area of responsibility.
Licenses and Certifications: Environmental Compliance Inspector I/II: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Environmental Compliance Inspector I: Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months from appointment, a valid Industrial Waste Inspector or Environmental Compliance Inspector Grade I certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
Environmental Compliance Inspector II: Possession of a valid Industrial Waste Inspector or Environmental Compliance Inspector Grade I certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
Environmental Compliance Inspector II - Sewer: Possession of, or successful acquisition within twelve (12) months of appointment, a valid California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) Wastewater Collection System Maintenance Grade I (C-1) certification, to be maintained throughout employment.

Customer Service: Techniques for providing effective service to the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
Ability to: Field Inspections & Compliance: Inspect, investigate, and monitor compliance with environmental regulations; conduct tests, readings, and sample collection.
Equipment Handling: Calibrate and operate monitoring equipment safely and accurately.
Interpret Regulations: Understand and apply relevant laws, codes, and regulations to ensure compliance.
Report Preparation: Collect data, prepare reports, maintain accurate records, and interpret meters and gauges.
Organizational Skills: Organize work, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines independently.
Communication: Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with proper use of English grammar and technical language.
