Job Description:

Summary:

Barr is seeking an environmental engineer to undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the investigation, evaluation, and remediation of contaminated sites. Work may include managing multidisciplinary teams; preparing technical work plans and reports; investigating contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor intrusion; conducting remediation technology evaluations and feasibility studies; developing site management strategies, remedial design, and response action plans; and coordinating site remediation activities. The work may at times involve short-term out-of-town assignments.

Responsibilities will also include development of proposals, scopes of work, and budgets; communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel; and overall project management. Responsibilities may also include staff mentoring, client relationship building, and business development. Other duties may include periodic on-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas; aquifer test performance and analysis; and construction observation.

Minimum Qualifications:

10 or more years of relevant work experience
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
Strong technical and problem-solving skills
Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
Strong computer skills, including word processing and use of spreadsheets
A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (including up to 10% travel; project needs will vary seasonally and over time)
Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications:

Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to become registered within one year
Familiarity with environmental regulations, including knowledge of Michigan Part 201 and Part 213 programs
40-hour HAZWOPER certification
Project management and leadership experience with complex projects
Experience conducting communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory and agency personnel
Experience with staff mentoring, client relationship building, and business development

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor, Michigan offices.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
