This position will be posted from November 4, 2024 to November 18, 2024 by 4:00pm. Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test and a background check. DRPA and PATCO are subject to federal law, under which marijuana continues to be illegal. Must be able to pass a proficiency examination that addresses all of the required knowledge. Position Purpose The Equipment Mechanic maintains equipment assigned to the Equipment Department. Individuals in this position maintain and overhaul mechanical equipment, systems accessories and appointments. The position will be called upon to assist others in cases of emergency and assigned other tasks requiring equal or less skill.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs preventive maintenance, diagnoses equipment malfunctions and makes appropriate repairs. Overhauls mechanical equipment, systems, accessories and appointments. Performs other related duties as required and assigned. Assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all necessary personal protective equipment. Education and/or Experience Required: High school graduate and have certification of completion of additional vocational/technical training as a mechanic. Five (5) years of continuous work experience as a journeyman mechanic can substitute for the vocational training requirement. This position requires two (2) years of experience as a mechanic maintaining, repairing and overhauling mechanical equipment. Individual must be able to successfully pass an examination, which tests comprehension of mechanical theory. Individual is expected to perform job duties independently and will be fully responsible for the correct completion of the work assigned. Individual must develop and apply personal workmanship standards that produce effective results. Experience with the correct and safe use of the full complement of industrial hand and power tools, measuring devices, gauges, test instruments and material handling equipment needed for maintenance work is required. Material handling equipment can include bridge cranes and fork lift trucks. The individual must have and maintain a valid driver's license from their state of residence. Experience using power cleaning, abrasive cleaning and painting equipment. Experience using heating equipment to assemble and disassemble components is required. Individual for this position will be trained before using any specialized equipment. Individual must drive the proper techniques, configurations and adjustment using experience and shop maintenance and rebuild manuals. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of PATCO's Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug and alcohol testing. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Individuals must lift, support and position components that weigh up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance. Must possess the manual dexterity to disassemble, assemble and install small components. The individual must possess visual acuity to identify and differentiate small parts as well as the ability to avoid workplace obstacles. The individual must have the ability to detect audible warnings in a rail car maintenance shop environment. Must have the ability to climb a rung ladder. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend/descend stairs, steps and ladders, etc. The individual must have normal day and night time vision, corrected or uncorrected, have normal hearing, with or without device. Must have the physical agility, balance and coordination required to climb heights in excess of 150 feet. Individual must be able to climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet and lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear the third rail, by stepping over the same. Must be able to perform all position functions. Must be able to physically operate all job related equipment for the position functions.

Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Usually, work is performed inside in general lighting, heating and ventilation. Cleaning work is performed outside in prevailing climate conditions. Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noises that are encountered in maintenance shops. Occasionally, work must be performed in rail storage yards, along active railroad rights of way, on bridges and in subways. When working on equipment, work space can be confined and the use of flashlights or other supplemental lighting may be required. Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) operates electrically propelled rail cars. All employees must be constantly aware of the hazards that cause electric shock and electrical flash burns.
