Executive Director of Development & Alumni and the EOU Foundation Location La Grande, OR : Eastern Oregon University ( EOU ) seeks nominations, applications, and expressions of interest for the position of Executive Director of Development & Alumni and the EOU Foundation. This position is a full-time, 12 month, position and reports directly to the VP for University Advancement. The Executive Director of Development & Alumni and the EOU Foundation (Executive Director) has overall responsibility for the leadership, management, and oversight of the Foundation and Alumni Association operations. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement (VPUA), the executive director builds and maintains organizational infrastructure to enable effective operations and is charged with the strategy, longer term and day-to-day management of philanthropic campaigns, donor relationships, alumni engagement with the university, and achieving fundraising outcomes. Initiative and competencies necessary to achieve fundraising and managerial outcomes, collaborative problem solving that enhances staff talents and advances the fulfillment of University goals, and unitive interpersonal behaviors are the hallmarks of this position. The Executive Director serves as the primary liaison and actively manages all Foundation and Alumni Association-related operations and works closely with university leadership, the Vice President, and Foundation Chair and Alumni Association Chair on fundraising, alumni engagement, and donor relationship efforts in response to the University's goals. The Executive Director is responsible for establishing goals, developing strategies and achieving outcomes for campaigns, donor stewardship and alumni engagement. The Executive Director organizes and works directly with staff, volunteers, and board members to implement and complete projects. The Executive Director carries an active portfolio of current and prospective benefactors with corresponding fundraising goals. The Executive Director directs and supervises the efforts of the development staff, and acts as backup to the Vice President as assigned necessary. The executive director is a vital member of the Advancement team and serves informally as coach, mentor and bridge builder for the division. The Executive Director ensures integrity, accountability and transparency in philanthropic gift and donor record management as approved by the Foundation Board of Directors and maintains accurate reporting systems necessary to document donor and alumni engagement, fund use and disbursement, policy and procedure development and implementation and progress towards achievement of the goals. Attributes and Key Characteristics The Executive Director of Development position calls for an individual possessing three major characteristics: An instinctive drive to connect Eastern Oregon University with the philanthropic needs of current and prospective benefactors; Proactive, empirically pragmatic and collaborative approaches to solving problems and achieving goals; and Adept and caring interpersonal behaviors characterized by refined adaptive, nonjudgmental and empathetic attitudes with a wide variety of constituents. Additional skills and abilities include: Establishing and maintaining collaborative working relationships at all levels of the University; Communicating effectively in presenting ideas and concepts verbally and in writing; Developing opportunities for collaboration between and among diverse groups; Working effectively with ethnic, cultural, and socially diverse student and staff populations. Responsibilities Providing leadership and guidance to the members of the Development staff by providing a strategic framework and regular supervision and feedback on their individual and collective roles and responsibilities; review and evaluate the needs, timing and potential impact of proposed fundraising efforts; and maintain the performance of staff donor portfolios; Serving as the primary liaison and lead staff for the EOU Foundation Board of Directors and trustees, and the EOU Alumni Association board of directors and members; Ensuring the Foundation and Alumni boards and committees meet regularly and in accordance with their bylaws; Regularly updating the VP, President and Foundation board on fundraising activities and results; Identifying problems, analyzing data and making achievable recommendations; Acquiring, allocating and managing resources (fiscal and human resources); Coordinating current and planned future fundraising activities across the university; Developing market segmented based fundraising goals, strategies and benchmarks; Ensuring the annual EOU fund campaigns are effectively carried out each year; Working with university leadership, college deans, department chairs and individual faculty to increase philanthropic support for identified academic programs; Working closely with the athletic director, coaches and athletic association to coordinate and/or lead fundraising efforts; Managing an active portfolio of donors and alumni over a wide geographic territory requiring significant and frequent travel on behalf of the university; Identifying, developing, soliciting and stewarding major gift donors; Professionally representing EOU to alumni and donors at the local, state and national level; Recommending, planning and managing events and opportunities to build philanthropic support; Reviewing, evaluating, updating and recommending policies on fundraising and for Foundation management; Managing the President's Circle and other significant donor programs; Establishing and enhancing a donor-prospect rating and cultivation system to research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward; Being generous, creative, innovative, willing to take calculated risks and strategically think outside of current normative practices to productively achieve established goals. Ensuing all laws, policies and procedures related to the running of the Foundation, a separate non-profit organization, are followed and integrity in the process is maintained; Representing the University to external entities and with outside agencies in matters relating to the University's mission and goals; Overseeing the operations of the EOU Alumni Association and related staff; Establishing, enhancing and promoting respect for students, faculty, and staff and recognizes initiative and excellence; Attending and participating in University activities and special events; Serving as acting vice president in the absence of the VP and by delegated authority. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field. Skills required typically obtained through a bachelor's degree include very strong communication, interpersonal relationship and observation skills; problem solving and critical thinking; speaking, organizational and presentation skills; research and team skills; multi-tasking ability. Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in fundraising with ability to create, lead and implement successful fundraising efforts (campaign management, alumni, major gifts, gift documentation and management) at both large and small-scale operational levels. Five (5) to eight (8) years of proven experience working in a lead and liaison role to volunteer boards, advisory groups, alumni, and committees. Two (2) to four(4) years of demonstrated knowledge of donor acquisition and engagement techniques, individual gift proposal development and presentation, campaign assessment, organization and leadership. Five (5) years of Supervisory experience of multiple professionals and program areas. Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment. Preferred Qualifications Masters Degree in business administration, public administration or other discipline that developed advanced skills that include specialized experience in relationship management; very strong communication, interpersonal relationship and observation skills; problem solving and critical thinking; speaking, organizational and presentation skills; research and team skills; multi-tasking ability.
