The Commodities Department is a market leader in energy, metals, and agricultural product trading worldwide whose professionals trade in both physical and derivative commodity risk. The Global Oil business within Commodities provides liquidity and takes risks across all global petroleum markets in all regions, and services a worldwide client base with a deep and complete suite of product offerings.
Job Description
This is an Analyst or Associate role on the North American Oil Trading desk, located in New York City., within the Commodities department. The desk is focused on North American crude and refined petroleum products, such as WTI, Gasoline, Diesel, and NGLs.
A successful candidate would be able to develop a deep understanding of market structure, fundamentals, and client flows within North American and Global Oil Markets. The candidate would work closely with the senior traders to assist with the following tasks:
• Perform market making and risk management in North American refined product and NGL markets, backing up the main traders in both business lines
• Perform desk administrative tasks, including execution and booking of swap roll off, and publishing settlements.
• Identify profitable trading opportunities and perform quantitative analysis of market trends and correlations.
• Work with IT to improve existing processes and systems
• Support marketing with client requests and interactions, including possible occasional travel
• Experience in a traditional programming language such as Java, C/C++, Python, or R.
• Undergraduate Degree in finance, economics, computer science, statistics, engineering or other quantitative based discipline
• 1-4 years of professional experience, with preference for oil market experience
• Strong knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Excel and related applications
• Excellent analytical and quantitative skills
• Strong research and communication skills
• Strong interest in trading, financial markets, and the commodities space (particularly energy commodities)
• Familiarity in VBA and/or SQL
• Must be an excellent team player and multitasker
Expected base pay rates for the role will be between $110,000 and $125,000 per year commencement of employment for Analyst, and between $150,000 and $200,000 per year commencement of employment for Associate. However, base pay if hired will be determined on an individualized basis and is only part of the total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, incentive compensation, discretionary bonuses, other short and long-term incentive packages, and other Morgan Stanley sponsored benefit programs.
