Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Police Captain - Operations, the Field Sergeant is responsible for the direct and indirect supervision of all aspects of field operations.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision - Directly supervises and evaluates all sworn personnel assigned a particular Watch. Day-to-day evaluation of officer actions to determine compliance with laws and Department Policy. Takes immediate positive actions to prevent or stop actions deemed unlawful or outside Department Policy.
General Law Enforcement and Community Interactions - Employee handles criminal and non-criminal cases; problems of safety; and public service situations. Investigates criminal occurrences. Makes arrests and transports prisoners. Employee contacts all witnesses involved in cases and may remind them of trial and court dates, to include assisting them in preparing for testimony.
Administration and Report Writing - The employee writes reports which accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee. This includes accident diagrams or crime scenes as needed and requires knowledge of computer operations.
Interpersonal Communication - Interacts with the community, establishing a sense of personal safety and promoting the public trust throughout the community. Patrols the campus and other property owned or operated by the University.
Training and Presentations - Participates in training which includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Employee must successfully demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms and participates in defensive tactics and physical fitness training.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and in writing. Knowledge of law enforcement methods, traffic control and arrest safety procedures. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine a proper course of action to be taken.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
• Equivalent to a high school diploma and successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program, including a Basic Course Certificate and three or more years of active law enforcement experience required, five or more years preferred.
• Completion of a P.O.S.T Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
• Must meet employment requirements established by P.O.S.T and state law.
Physical Summary
Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.

Licenses / Certificates
• Valid California Driver's License required.
Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range:The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $10,215 - $11,449 per month.

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
