­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Announcement # 2023-158 Fire Control Worker I (10) Positions Fire Management Department of Natural Resources Hourly Wage: $15.43/Temporary/Full-Time The purpose of Fire Control Worker I is wildland suppression, management, control as a firefighter on an engine, helitack module or hand crew. Duties include fire prevention, patrol detection, prescribed burning, search and rescue, tree planting, fuels reduction and assisting the Yakama Nation community. The incumbent will also be involved with the maintenance and repair of firefighting tools, equipment, and facilities. Incumbent will receive basic firefighting training.
Examples of Work Performed: Serves as a trainee firefighter to develop a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques, practices and terminology. Will be responsible to learn the following duties: safety rules, basic fire behavior, fire line construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays using appropriate nozzle adjustments in the effective use of water additives, working in and around helicopters, dozers, fall buncher and skidders. Move dirt, chop brush, small trees to construct fire lines using various hand tools including: Pulaski, shovels, McCloud, power tools, chainsaws and portable pumps to control spreading of wildland fire and prepare control lines prior to burning. Patrol fire lines to locate and extinguish sparks, flare-ups and hotspot fires that may threaten developed fire lines. Participate in fire and safety trainings, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe efficient operation and use of tools, equipment and vehicle use in fire lines activities. Must participate in crew proficiency checks, drills, safety sessions and After Action Reviews and ensures safety in all aspects of the assignment. Employee may be assigned to other duties which may include, but are not limited to: cleaning outside the recreational facilities, mow grass, trim shrubs, pull weeds, perform trail/building maintenance, complete resource management projects performing fire related or non-fire related. Duties involve fieldwork requiring about average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to perform heavy physical work. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and use sound judgement. Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe efficient manner (chainsaw, hand tools, drip torch,). Ability to work outside in various weather conditions and perform physical labor. Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. Required to pass pre-employment drug test. Must successfully complete Basic Firefighter Training. Must successfully complete Introduction to ICS (1-100). Must successfully complete Firefighter Training (S-130). Must successfully complete Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180). Must successfully complete Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190). The rigorous duties of this position requires the incumbent to meet the physical fitness test for arduous position. The hazardous nature of the job requires that protective clothing to work, (hardhat, leather gloves, leather boots, flame resistant clothing and other personal protective equipment). PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST : Is required for Pre-Employment with the Yakama Nation. During employment, tribal employees are also subject to random testing (YN Personnel Policy Manual, Chapter 2.9.6, Section (a), (g), Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy).
TRAINEE : The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.
INDIAN PREFERENCE : In efforts to practice Self-Determination, the Yakama Nation grants Indian Preference for employment, promotions, and transfers to its employees and qualified applicants as appropriate. This may limit career opportunities for non-Indian applicants and candidates.
Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.3:
10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation. 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member. 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe). 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member. 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member. 0-points= Non-Indian. Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4:
Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe). VETERAN PREFERENCE : Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.
Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.
IMMIGRATION : If selected for employment with the Yakama Nation, you will be required to provide documentation stating you are authorized to work in the United States.
