Summary Are you experienced in fire protection principles and practices and want to play a major role in supporting the NIH mission? Then consider joining the Division of the Fire Marshal (DFM) as a Fire Protection Specialist. The National Institutes of Health is seeking candidates with a robust sense of responsibility to undertake a diverse range of tasks related to the management of fire safety programs. Duties Organizes, schedules and conducts comprehensive fire protection analysis and surveys of laboratories, shops, offices and all other areas on the NIH campus. Evaluates work practices, procedures and physical conditions to determine compliance with required or accepted fire protection codes and standards, established fire-safety policy and procedures relative to the various program areas. Provides advice and guidance to those Fire Marshals and fire departments on fire protection and prevention for biomedical research facilities and health care facilities. Develops training course material and conducts training classes for personnel on portable fire extinguisher use, fire suppression techniques, building evacuation, fire-emergency instructions, and fire detection and suppression systems. Coordinates investigations of suspicious and incendiary fires with appropriate law enforcement agencies. Develops fire-safety announcements and prepares articles for internal publications to inform the NIH community on the details of the fire to help prevent recurrences. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date. Qualifications To qualify for the GS-7 level: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: conducting surveys of facilities to identify fire risks; compiling data for use in developing reports and written materials on fire protection an life safety programs; Conducting fire hazard analysis of special event locations (tents or other locations) to identify fire hazards prior to event. To qualify for the GS-9 level: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: administering fire protection and safety programs for an organization; conducting technical research to support higher grade staff in analyzing fire protection programs and issues; reviewing and providing input on fire protection policies and procedures; drafting reports and written materials on fire protection and life safety programs and issues; and coordinating fire protection and life safety programs with internal staff. To qualify for the GS-11 level: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: administering fire protection and safety programs in a biomedical research environment; conducting studies and analyses of fire protection programs and issues; monitoring compliance of work practices and procedures with fire protection policies and procedures; preparing reports and other written materials on fire protection and life safety programs and issues; and coordinating fire protection and life safety programs and issues with internal staff and external organizations.
