This is a virtual position.Qualifications:Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR PhD Degree in Agriculture, natural resources, agronomy or related field of study.This position requires both a high level of skill that is the result of many years of experience gained through work across the spectrum of research and applied work in forestry and wildland fire science. In addition, the level of coordination ability expected of the position demands a level of stature and reputation for performance that is the result of many years working with individuals and organizations throughout the wildland fire community.Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point, Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS)Duties:This position supports research activities related to the Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment. It is expected that the position will involve a variety of leadership support, administrative, research, and management liaison activities that reflect the broad and interdisciplinary nature of this national-priority research project.Assist with preparation of publications, reports, meeting and conference agendas, and materials for training and liaison activities with cooperators and host organizations.25%Attend meetings, calls, and in-person site visits to assist with organizing project activities.20%Assist with project management and oversight activities such as reviewing activity progress and timelines, report and publication progress, and activities of personnel.20%Communicate with project stakeholders including research cooperators, scientific collaborators, host site personnel, managers, and project funding organizations.20%Travel to field sites or meeting locations.15%Other:Travel Requirements: Occasional travel to field sites and meetings will be required and scheduled in advance in coordination with PI and cooperators.Overnight travel: Travel is anticipated to be required every 2-3 months, for 2-4 days per trip.Air travel anticipated: Travel is anticipated to be required every 2-3 months, for 2-4 days per trip.Rental cars: Travel is anticipated to be required every 2-3 months, for 2-4 days per trip.Health and Safety Considerations: Fieldwork in remote sites involves off-road vehicle travel, foot travel in forests and rangelands, and occasional work near wildland fire activities. Prior Government experience operating motor vehicles, conducting fieldwork at remote sites, and work involving wildland fire, along with demonstrated prior safety training for these activities, will be acceptable as a risk mitigation for these activities.Required Safety Gear: Typical fire PPE (e.g., Nomex top and trousers, fire-rated boots, helmet, leather gloves, and eye protection) may be required at times. Prior training in the proper use of fire PPE and use of fire shelter will be required.Safety Gear Use: Safety equipment described above will be required during occasions when fieldwork near wildland fire activities is anticipated. These activities will be infrequent (2-3 times per year approximately).Physical requirements: Ability to travel by foot in rough terrain to conduct field site selection, data collection, and observation activities. Ability to lift 25 pounds into or out of vehicles including pickup beds.
