Fractional Controller (Federal Grants) Location Remote in San Francisco, CA : Grants Controller Full Time Role Remote, USA We are representing a well established Accounting Firm that focuses on start up organizations. As a Fractional Controller, you will be working with anywhere from 4-7 clients at a time and must be flexible to client needs. However, this role differs from other consulting opportunities as you will be working as part of a team with a Divisional Leader and on a W-2 with full benefits. This candidate must have experience in federal grant accounting with agencies such at NIH, CMS, NSF, DOE, USDA. We are seeking individuals strong with Grant Accounting specific to these federal grants as they will be guiding clients/organizations in this area. We're a remote-first workplace, so you can work from your home office or from the beach if you'd like! Become a key player as a Grants Controller: This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to overseeing monthly and yearly financial closes, no day will be a typical day (hence the typical, atypical day). You will be supporting our startup clients who need Controller help but may not have a need for an internal team at their growth stage (usually we work with Seed through Series C clients). So, there is always a lot of work to be done! You'll be working with a variety of clients, so the ability to context shift, communicate, prioritize, and evaluate needs is the most important thing you'll be doing in this role. You'll be managing accountants and processes for our clients and possibly internally to Burkland, too, so you'll want to have a background in management. Embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is a must. Here's how you'll make an impact on the team: Build and oversee accounting processes for full cycle accounting Perform financial statement analysis Review and recommend improvements to chart of accounts Provide guidance on cost of goods sold Possess prior client-facing experience Prepare financial statements, reports, and presentations Handle accounting for intercompany activity and perform financial statement consolidations Manage accounting for unrealized gains and losses Demonstrate familiarity with equity accounting and reconcile stock and convertible notes Possess advanced knowledge of ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition) and ASC 842 (Lease Accounting) Oversee the work product of others Understand the financial due diligence process Manage accounting for grants and government contracts Segregate direct and indirect costs, distinguish between allowable and unallowable costs Ensure DCAA compliance for both pre and post-award activities Recognize revenue based on grant documents, funder restrictions, milestones, and deliverables Here's what you'll need to be successful in this role: You have a Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, or something similar, and over 5 years of progressive experience. You are naturally curious and a problem-solver. You're someone who likes to learn and is eager to take on new challenges, especially when it comes to cutting-edge technology and emerging industries. You are a communicator at your core. Bonus points if you have customer or client service experience, this is a cornerstone of the role. You lead with integrity in all that you say and do. You take the initiative and jump at the opportunity to explore new ways of doing things.
