Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures under the supervision of a qualified physician. Uses ultrasound technology and techniques to assist in the diagnosis of patient medical problems for patients throughout the age continuum.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
2. *Performs ultrasound procedures to include abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological, neuro, small parts, breast, interventional and Doppler.
3. *Uses sterile technique as required for invasive procedures.
4. *Optimally demonstrates patient anatomy through proper positioning and transducer selection.
5. *Competently operates all ultrasound equipment and support systems to include HIS, RIS, Scheduling System, PACS, C-PACS, Sono Sites and offsite Radiologist Services.
6. *Utilizes department computer systems, PACS, etc., to review patient history and provide accurate documentation of studies.
7. *Properly cares for and images patients of all ages; maintains patient confidentiality.
8. *Coordinates exams within the department and with other departments to provide expedient and complete care; communicates with medical staff, coworkers, patients, families and other hospital staff to ensure quality patient care.
9. *Handles telephone calls for scheduling, coordination or questions with courtesy and accuracy.
10. *Participates in the department's quality improvement plan as required.
11. *Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment as necessary; notifies supervisor of equipment problems and calls appropriate service vendors as needed.
12. *Keeps work area properly supplied.
13. *Participates in the training of diagnostic medical sonography students and provides general support of their clinical education; completes required documentation as indicated and adheres to the expectations of the Bryan College of Health Sciences General Sonography program.
14. *Accesses and administers drugs and biologicals that are pertinent to essential job functions in accordance with Medical Center procedures.
15. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
16. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
17. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
2. Knowledge of sonographic anatomy and pathophysiology.
3. Knowledge of the physical principles of ultrasound and Doppler techniques.
4. Knowledge of ultrasound invasive and non-invasive procedures.
5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
6. Skill in operating ultrasound machines, transducers, image capture devices, PACS, and other related systems.
7. Ability to react appropriately and perform work under stressful and emergent situations.
8. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
9. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program required. American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification in the practice specialty of abdomen required within three (3) months of hire date required.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network.
