GLSEN and its 35 local chapters work at the local, district, state, and federal level to create systems change in K-12 education in the U.S. Our work has produced measurable improvements in the lives of LGBTQ students in the United States, and helped establish new norms of support for LGBTQ students in the education world.
Since 2002, GLSEN Arizona has worked to create safer and more affirming K-12 schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We train educators and school administrators, support and strengthen student-led Gender/Sexuality Alliance (GSA) clubs, and work with school communities, lawmakers, and local stakeholders to reform and implement evidence-based LGBTQ-inclusive and affirming education law as well as school policies, practices and curriculum.
As part of the GLSEN National Chapter Network, we are in the midst of a major institutional transformation process which is striving to advance racial, gender, and disability justice. Position Summary: GLSEN Arizona is seeking a passionate and dynamic individual to serve as the Arizona Chapter Director. This key leadership role will focus on statewide organizing efforts through the expansion of local sites with local organizers, mobilizing members, managing a small team of staff, contractors, interns, volunteers, and working committees, all in support of education justice in Arizona. The ideal candidate will have experience in statewide organizing, fundraising, team management, public communication, and a deep commitment to social justice and GLSEN's mission of ensuring safe, inclusive, and affirming K-12 learning environments for LGBTQIA2S+ and ALL students.
The Arizona Chapter Director is an employee of GLSEN Inc., is supervised by the GLSEN National Deputy Executive Director of Programs and Power Building, and is accountable to the Arizona Chapter Core Team and its member base.
Responsibilities: Team Management and Leadership: Work with the Core Team to develop an annual work plan and corresponding budget, and report regularly to the GLSEN Arizona Core Team. Manage a small team of staff and interns, providing guidance, support, and mentorship; provide leadership and oversight to volunteer members of the Core Team and working committees. Foster a diverse, collaborative and inclusive working environment, encouraging teamwork, creativity, and innovation. Conduct regular check-ins, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities for team members. Advocacy and Education Justice in Arizona: Work with the GLSEN Arizona Core Team and Working Committees to develop and lead the Chapter's vision to advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ inclusivity in Arizona's K-12 education system, working to reform policies, practices, and curriculum. Establish working relationships with education stakeholders, policymakers, and community partners to advance education justice and equity for all students. Represent the Chapter in raising awareness of LGBTQIA2S+ issues in education through public education, media engagement, and community education efforts. Member Mobilization and Engagement: Mobilize GLSEN Arizona members and supporters to advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ inclusivity in K-12 education. Develop and implement strategies to engage members in advocacy campaigns, events, and initiatives. Foster a sense of community and belonging among multi-generational GLSEN members, ensuring their voices are heard and valued in organizational decision-making processes. Statewide Organizing and Expansion: Develop and implement a plan for expanding GLSEN Arizona's presence across the state through the strategic establishment of sustainable local sites with local organizers. Identify target communities and schools for expansion efforts, assessing needs and opportunities for engagement. Provide leadership and support to local organizers, guiding them in establishing and maintaining effective GLSEN Arizona hubs in their respective communities. Leverage the power of Chapter's local community hubs by establishing and maintaining relationships across them. Fundraising and Resource Development: Work with the Chapter Fundraising Manager and Resource Mobilization Committee to build and implement a diverse and sustainable funding stream to support/meet the needs of and grow GLSEN Arizona's programs and initiatives. Ensure the Chapter meets all compliance and reporting requirements in an effort to steward good donor and grantmaker relationships. Work closely with the National GLSEN office and other stakeholders to leverage funding opportunities and maximize impact. Operations and Finances Oversee the Chapter's budgets, and finances working closely with GLSEN National Finance office to ensure ethical, effective, and efficient utilization of resources. Oversee the Chapter's operations, including management systems, office facilities, vendor contracts, Provide regular reports to the Core Team, GLSEN National and stakeholders. Work closely with the Fundraising Manager and Resource Mobilization Committee to align financial strategies with fundraising goals and support the sustainability of GLSEN Arizona's programs and initiatives. Chapter Network: Participate in GLSEN's Chapter Network activities to foster collaboration, share best practices, and contribute to the overall success of the national organization. Attend regular meetings, conferences, and training sessions organized by the GLSEN National office and participate in collaborative initiatives with other GLSEN chapters across the country. Engage with fellow chapter leaders to exchange ideas, leverage resources, and collectively advance GLSEN's mission. Qualifications: Minimum of 10 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, statewide organizing, and fundraising. Strong understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ issues in education and a commitment to social justice and educational equity. Proven track record of successful team management and leadership. Knowledge of the Arizona education system and political landscape is required. Existing relationships within the Arizona education system is a plus. Positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed. Experience engaging with and bringing together a wide range of stakeholders and communities. Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to strategic planning and organizational capacity building.
