The Position
The purpose of this classification is to correctly locate, identify and mark underground distribution power systems.
May locate gas, and water lines/main as required.
Duties
Performs work functions associated with identifying, locating, marking and recording underground residential distribution power systems.
May perform manual work functions associated with power distribution maintenance, construction, and repair of power distribution systems, (which may include assisting with laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.).
May operate a directional drill to install conduit/cable to support electrical and telecommunications networks; may install potable water lines and high/low pressure gas lines.
Operates an electronic locating device to properly navigate drill head.
Calculates percentages of elevation to navigate drill head over, under or around objects.
Communicates with Drill Operator to properly navigate drill head with damaging existing utilities while maintaining proper NESC Clearances for Underground Residential Distribution power cables and conduits.
Reads, analyzes and interprets draft plans and maps.
Maintains records of conduit installations, documents locations of Electronic Marking devices, and maintains a current working knowledge of UPC, PSC and Local laws governing locating and protecting underground and overhead electrical utility systems.
Organizes daily ticket routing to achieve maximum efficiency; reviews tickets before and after all locates.
Maintains and stores records of locates for the appropriate span of time.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools including a pipe horn and cable locator, metal detector/locator, shovel, probe rod, sledge hammer, striping machine/equipment, level survey rod, computer, fax machine, calculator, etc.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition (e.g.
inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, etc.
); monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Performs safe work practices while working around energized electrical lines and apparatus.
Prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work sheets, time sheets, and other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, work sheets, maps, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards and/or maintains as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
Provides emergency assistance and/or backup coverage to other employees or departments as needed.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years previous experience and/or technical training in Hydraulic Directional Drilling, utility construction and/or maintenance.
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
Must have general knowledge of electronic locating devices and how they operate.
Locating Certification desirable.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require the ability to perceive and discern colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, depths, textures.
Some tasks require visual perception and discernment.
Environmental Factors: Tasks risk exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, fiber optic cables, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents and chemicals, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
