The primary goal of the Head Custodian position is to be responsible for overall cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety and maintenance of assigned school buildings, grounds and equipment. Schedule and oversee work of custodial personnel, building repairs, building use and building systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: - Facilitates the preparation, set-up and tear-down of events by utilizing SchoolDude and FMPro
- Direct and organize the work of custodial staff on first, second and third shift.
- Schedule the evening activity setup, teardown, and cleaning duties
- Provides excellent customer service for all internal and external customers.
- Cleans classrooms, corridors, service areas, locker rooms, restrooms and other areas as assigned, but not limited to the following functions: sweeping, vacuuming, dry mopping, wet mopping, scrubbing, window cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting.
- Check building for proper cleaning and report or repair any mechanical difficulties.
- Maintain boilers, fans, mechanical and electrical equipment, and furniture on campus.
- Loads, unloads, and delivers materials including furniture and supplies, as necessary.
- Maintain records of custodial supplies for purchasing and attendance/payroll records for their building/staff
- Performs minor maintenance activities encountered within their assigned areas which may include the use of common hand or power tools, materials and supplies and communicates needs that go beyond the scope of their skill level.
- Maintains building security including opening and locking rooms/buildings.
- Performs floor care such as waxing, stripping, and buffing.
- Performs ice, snow and debris removal from entry ways, stairs and ramps as warranted.
- Conduct regular inspections (as instructed)
- Actively participate in the evaluation process
- Reports all unsafe/unhealthy conditions and any incidents of damage/vandalism to a supervisor.
- All other duties that may be assigned, in a manner that will meet the standards established by the Superintendent and/or the district.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Must pass a work-related physical, drug screen and TB test
- Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be consistent in punctuality and work attendance
- Ability to plan, collect and organize materials and equipment commonly used for the tasks assigned
- Ability to follow direction, learn and follow all district cleaning standards, policies and procedures
- Must be able to earn trust and confidence from their coworkers and be able to take personal accountability
- Ability to effectively lead, assign and direct the work of subordinates
- Ability to train and instruct employees in cleaning, heating and minor maintenance operations
- Ability to use good judgment and solve problems sometimes in emergencies or within tight deadlines
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends) to meet program needs
- Must demonstrate strong convictions and support for the District and Department's mission, vision, and goals
- Ability to work positively, effectively, and ethically with the community, students, parents, and District personnel
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements as well as Board and District policies and guidelines
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND TRAINING): - High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One (1) year prior supervisory experience
- Three (3) or more years of experience in performing custodial duties and in the operation of cleaning equipment
- Two (2) or more years' experience in minor equipment maintenance work
- Two (2) or more years' experience in the operation of mechanical plant facilities and equipment
- Two (2) or more years of experience in customer service
- Experience in a school district setting is desirable
- Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician.
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license and excellent driving record
- Obtain and maintain a Boiler Operator's License (within 90 days of employment)
- Maintain certification in First Aid and CPR with AED
- Knowledge of fundamental computer skills and programs

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Generally the job requires 50% walking and 50% standing.
MENTAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; and interact with school district staff, parents, students, the public and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.
