SALARY: The salary schedule for the apprentice role starts at Step A of AFS 23 and progresses through to Step D over a three-year period.
The current rates as of this posting are: Step A : $40.66/hour Step C : $42.72/hour (after one year) Step D : $43.80/hour (after two years) ABOUT US: The East Bay Regional Park District is a system of beautiful parklands in Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the east of San Francisco.

Essential Functions WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING: Under the supervision of the Roads & Trails Crew Supervisor and with guidance from journey-level Heavy Equipment Operators, the apprentice will gain hands-on experience and education over the course of a three-year apprenticeship.
Upon successful completion of the program, the apprentice will be eligible for promotion to the Heavy Equipment Operator classification.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, AND License or Certificate: Possession valid Class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.
During the course of the apprenticeship the apprentice will gain: Knowledge of: Loading, unloading, and securely tying down equipment Asphalt and erosion control device products and applications Safe excavation around underground utilities Department of Transportation regulations Journey-level knowledge in the operation of a broad variety of heavy equipment Basic office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Ability to: Safely excavate for the installation of tanks Select the most efficient machine for each project Coordinate and plan non-engineered projects and communicate plans with crew Read grade stakes Survey markers, and blue prints Use transit Maintain equipment Install culverts, fords, swales, and storm drains Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers.

MOU PROVISION FOR INTERNAL CANDIDATES: Per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AFSCME Local 2428, this position will be posted internally for two weeks.
If nine or more qualified internal applicants apply and complete the process, selection will be made from this group.
If fewer than nine internal candidates apply, the position will be opened to external applicants after the internal posting period.
All apprentices shall satisfactorily complete prescribed courses of related and supplemental instruction, which is approximately 144 hours per year approved which is approximately a minimum of one to two courses per year approved by the Local Education Agency (LEA), Hayward Adult School.
All classes may be completed at local community colleges or adult schools.
Apprentices may take additional coursework depending on the skill level of the apprentice and the availability of coursework.
Because our Apprenticeship is State-certified, our training must be acceptable to the State.
If they change their requirements over time, so must we.
Any alteration of this Training Plan would be expected to be minor, and we expect that any candidate for Apprenticeship will be able to adjust to such alterations, if they become necessary.

In the event the selected Apprentice is an internal Park District employee at the time of selection, the Apprentice will be subject to a six (6) month probationary period under AFSCME MOU Article 17.2 and shall have reversion rights under AFSCME MOU Article Page 3 of 4 17.6 if they fail to successfully complete the probationary period.
Additionally, subject to the terms in Section 5 above, reversion rights to a previously held position shall be provided for a period of three (3) years while in the Apprenticeship Program if there is a current vacancy in the previously held classification.
Reversion to the prior work location is not guaranteed but the Park District will use best efforts to place the employee into an equivalent location.
In the event the selected Apprentice is not an internal Park District employee at the time of selection, the Apprentice will remain in at-will status for the duration of their apprenticeship.
Union Affiliation : East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification.
