By joining our District One as a Highway Technician I in Marshall County, you'll have the opportunity to Perform intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Operates intermediate equipment such as, but not limited to asphalt distributors, asphalt hot boxes, asphalt recyclers, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro-seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers and learns to operate advanced equipment such as, but not limited to boom saws, bulldozers, cranes, excavators, graders, lowboys, milling machines, self-propelled pavers, semi-trucks/trailers; and performs other duties as required.


Performs technical tasks in support of engineering programs related to agency highway maintenance and construction and/or to coordinate the work of other sub-professional engineering or structures staff; and performs other duties as required. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions of the class must be approved by a Licensed Professional Engineer under KRS 322.)


Holders of the Highway Technician I position will complete tasks such as: Serve as quality assurance inspector for construction & maintenance work. Operate equipment such as single axle truck snowplow, bush hogs, chippers and mowing tractors. Perform basic surveying activities. Perform basic materials sampling and testing such as concrete slum and temperature, and asphalt content and density. Holders of this job title will obtain: You will have the opportunity to learn in the classroom and in the field to grow in your maintenance and construction inspection knowledge. EDUCATION: High school graduate.




EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of construction or highway maintenance experience.




Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance.


Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.




Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification.


Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
