The Laboratory Manager provides operational leadership and oversight for the Histology-Cytology Laboratory at Cambridge Health Alliance, ensuring the highest quality technical performance in accordance with the Cytology and Histology Department's service delivery goals and standards.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Assists the Laboratory Director in the interviewing, orientation coordination, and training of all new employees for the Cytology and Histology DepartmentResponsible for the annual review and competency evaluation of all staffWrites and periodically reviews procedures and policies for the departmentWorks on bench as needed to process and prepare surgical specimensResponsible for evaluating new laboratory techniques and proceduresEffectively manages the inventory of supplies, purchasing and budgeting for the departmentResponsible for maintaining Cytology/Histology in a state of readiness for CAP, JCAHO and CLIAA inspectionsActively participates in committees/task force meetings as requiredConducts regular department meetings with staff to both relay information and to seek input from staff on the operations of the departmentReview and maintains all quality control data and instrument maintenance recordsWorks closely with the Pathologists and Histology staff to ensure that the department adheres to established surgical turn-around-times parametersWorks closely with the Pathologists and Cytology staff to identify and correct factors that prevent optimal turn-around-times for PAP smear specimensIntegrates quality improvement into daily work; conducts audits as needed and reports findings to the monthly Quality Improvement committeeEffectively meets the department's scheduling and staffing needsProvides a leadership role in the development of a productive work team; engages the staff in the development of improvement effortsResponsible for the maintenance of Frozen Section and Fine Needle Aspirates areas at all three hospital campusesEffectively manages the transport of specimens from all three hospital ORsWorks closely with the Pathologists and Pathology Assistant to provide support in the grossing areaWorks closely with the Pathologists and Cytotechnologists to improve the turn-around-times for non-GYN specimens Education/Certification: Histology (HT) Certification requiredBachelor's Degree in a Biological Science or Chemistry preferred5 years of full-time applicable experience within the last 10 yearsSuccessful completion of a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program with HTL certification preferred Additional requirements: Excellent communication skills, both oral and writtenStrong organizational skills and ability to multi-taskExperience in processing, fixation, microtomy and staining of surgical specimens; Immunohistochemistry experience requiredExperience with instrumentation, troubleshooting skills and ability to manage quality control systemsComputer skills essential; Word, Excel and Meditech computer experience preferred; familiarity with Dragon desiredStrong Human Resources and team building skills; must be able to serve as a liaison between Cytology/Histology lab and the Physician groupKnowledge of Cytology Lab preferredFamiliarity with CAP accreditation requirements preferred
