Job Title: Home Based Teacher

Department: Early Learning

FLSA Status: Salary Nonexempt

General Statement of Duties:

To plan and implement a program of educational activities for pregnant women, infants, toddlers and their parents in the home.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Required to flex schedule to ensure if Home visits are canceled by either Parent or Staff that they are rescheduled in a timely fashion.
Required to ensure that weekly Home visits are conducted and ADA for each assigned child/family is at or above 85%.
Ability to develop trusting relationships with families.
Plan and implement individual education plans for each child using the selected curriculum as the basic guide and other resources.
Assist with problem solving and provide emotional support to parent(s).
Be a positive role model and give positive feedback to empower clients in regards to problem solving, self-care, birthing and parenting.
Get to know clients support systems and significant family members and encourage their positive involvement.
Work with parents to strengthen the family's knowledge of child development, including assisting parents to understand how children grow and learn, and planning and conducting child education activities with the parents, which meet the child's intellectual, physical, emotional, and social needs.
Assist parents in creating a home environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the Early Head Start child.
Assist parents and children in the home to achieve curriculum goals.
Assist parents in meeting the health, nutrition, and social service needs of the family.
Plan group experiences for Head Start home based option children.
Encourage home based option parents to attend socializations, Center Parent Education programs and Policy Committee meetings.
Assist with transportation needs as required.
Assist in evaluating the progress of children and providing reports to Parents, Family Service Worker, Specialist and /or Director.
Assist with completing skill checklists and ongoing observation as directed by the teacher.
Maintain confidentiality as related to home and school environment.
Maintain records as required (i.e.
attendance, meal counts, contact log, parent contacts, etc.).
Must address children, families and staff with respect and by name.

Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with clear professional boundaries that are sensitive and accepting of differences with staff and families.

Attend departmental and agency meetings and training as required.

Assist parents to strengthen their knowledge of community resources.

Coordinate with other staff regarding health screenings for children and other family members.
Assist in obtaining and informing parents of needed screenings for child's file.

Assist in completion of and keep ongoing communication with Family Service Worker in regards to Family Service Assessments and Family Partnership Agreements.

Assist in finding and directing clients in case of an emergency such as a fire or tornado.

Cooperates in any investigation related to personnel, licensing, accreditation or other circumstances.

Work positively and cooperatively with his/her supervisor, colleagues, and all Starfish Family Services staff.

Attend training and agency/department meetings as required or requested.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated interest and ability in working with parents and young children.
Ability to be self-directed in the completion of tasks.
Ability to communicate effectively with young children and their families.
Good understanding of child development, age appropriate behaviors, common childhood behavior problems and appropriate interventions.
Knowledge of or ability to learn to conduct developmental screenings and assessments of children.
Ability to develop and implement Family Partnership Agreements and IFSPs for children and their families.
Ability to demonstrate commitment, caring and respect for children and adults from diverse backgrounds.
Ability to work with all members of the community regardless of race, gender, age and cultural or ethnic background.
Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, colleagues and all agency staff.
Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the children and families the program serves and to the delivery of quality services.
Ability to accept supervision and demonstrate interest and willingness to continue his/her personal and professional growth and skill development.
Ability and desire for personal and professional growth, and skill development.
Ability to exhibit acceptable personal qualities and professional attitudes.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license and current automobile insurance.
Must possess a valid means of transportation to perform duties.
Ability to represent the agency in a processional manner.
Other Skills and Abilities Required:

Previous professional experience working with pregnant women and infants and toddlers.


Education, Training and Experience:

Associate's or BA/BS degree with a major in Early Childhood Education or Child Development (with a ZA (or Early Childhood) endorsement) required.
An Associate's degree in Education, Nursing or a Human Services related field with 12 credit hours in early childhood/child development also acceptable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Michigan Driver's License.
