Responsibilities & Qualifications The Hot Metal Subject Matter Expert (SME) will play a crucial role in our team, offering expertise and guidance in all hot metal production and processing aspects. The SME will report to the Associate Operations Leader and collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize processes and material flow. The Hot Metal SME will provide expert technical support, guidance, and leadership in handling, processing, and casting molten aluminum. This individual will work closely with operations, safety, and engineering teams to ensure proper execution of metallurgical processes, molten metal furnace operations, compliance with safety regulations, and optimization of production methods. The SME will also mentor staff, troubleshoot production issues, and lead continuous improvement initiatives related to molten metal operations.
Responsibilities: Support a world-class safety culture. Promote Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Culture, implement the EHS management system, and encourage continual improvement of EHS performance in day-to-day operations. Participate in Improvement Projects. Special Projects and tasks as assigned. Assist in coordinating day-to-day activities with the Associate Ops Leader for Hot Metal. Work closely with Scrap Champion to coordinate upcoming schedules and alloy transition strategies. Serve as "go-to" technical resource for all hot metal equipment (sidewells, tilt melter, NDC, kiln sow dryer, alloy dryer, hot shred conveyors, salt feeders, GSS's, etc.). Have a thorough understanding of MMP best practices and work to implement those: Molten metal safety Charging practices Alloying practices Skimming practices Sampling practices Routinely inspect equipment for proper condition and operation, regularly using PI to analyze trends and validate that equipment is operating as it should. Work closely with other areas (Cast, Cold Metal, Process, EMRA) on day-to-day challenges, various projects, and opportunities for improvement. Develop a thorough understanding of how to utilize best assets and how various types of alloy/form impact throughput. Keep track of "point of use" inventory items to maintain sufficient levels. Closely monitor dross volumes, recoveries, and data entry regarding dross management, including segregating dross type (black/white) and alloy. Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a BS or Technical Degree from an Accredited College is preferred. Minimum two years of experience working with molten aluminum. Excellent interpersonal relations. Excellent verbal and listening skills. Ability to prepare and make group presentations. Work with colleagues to reach consensus decisions. A good understanding of manufacturing systems and computer (MS Office, Windows, etc.) systems. Personal traits should include utilizing human relation skills, empowering, training, understanding, and developing others to attain the objectives. Must be self-motivated and possess excellent reading, writing, listening, and verbal skills. Must be flexible and operate in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple tasks and prioritizing work. Ability to represent Novelis with external parties. Ability to work evenings, weekdays, and holidays if necessary. Ability to respond to trouble calls 24 hours a day. Management of operational supplies. Preferred Qualifications: Five years of experience in the molten aluminum industry. Location Profile Novelis in Guthrie, Kentucky, is approximately 15 minutes from the Tennessee state line near Clarksville, Tennessee, and 30 minutes from Hopkinsville, Kentucky. As Novelis' newest facility, Guthrie houses a heat treatment and pretreatment line as well as a recycle center that will serve the North American automotive market and employ 300 residents.
