Summary Manages all operation and functions of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Consults with staff, providers, other members of leadership, and Director of Nursing on patient care matters and interpretation of facility policies and procedures to ensure department and patient needs are met. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department, and participates in CQI initiatives.
Assumes 24/7 accountability for the management of appropriate provisioning of nursing and support resources in the department. Communicates clearly and professionally with the mission, vision, and strategic goals of KRMC in mind. Implements standards of practice, reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in standards of care and the people served within the ICU. Manages coordination of the department in order maximize productivity and minimize costs. Accountable for the efficient delivery of patient care within the department through effective implementation, evaluation, and utilization of safe, cost-effective, high-quality practices. Manages department operations to achieve quality improvement and patient satisfaction goals/objectives. Acts as a liaison with patients, physicians and employees to ensure high-quality patient care. Addresses and supports cultural practices if the practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical care. Develops, communicates and implements policies and procedures and monitors compliance. Collaborates with the Director of Nursing and uses findings from patient satisfaction survey with input from the staff to establish and implement unit-based customer service initiatives. Assures that clear, concise and current written policies and procedures are available to assist the staff and minimize risk factors. Maintains established department staffing plans to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions exist to provide optimal patient care coverage. Assures that all aspects of patient care occur in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Develops and approves job descriptions within the scope of responsibility. Effectively leads and administers the performance appraisal system. Gives routine performance feedback, conducts annual performance reviews for personnel, and works in collaboration with HR and the senior leadership team to ensure the reward and recognition system is competitive. Collaborates with Human Resources to effectively resolve employee and labor management issues. Builds and leads a culture of teamwork and respect throughout the department, engaging effectively with all stakeholders, e.g. physicians, staff, outside contractors, and the people served. Provides leadership and mentorship in the development of staff. Experience: A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a clinical discipline required; Master's Degree in a clinical discipline, Business, or Healthcare Management preferred. Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHISS (PALS and NIHISS within 90 days of hire). A minimum of five (5) years of clinical acute care hospital experience is required, two (2) of those years to include experience in management/leadership; recent experience in a critical care setting or in leadership preferred.
