Position Overview Olson Engineering requires an Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer with prior experience developing control systems packages (Scopes of Work, Narratives, IO Lists, CEMs, etc.) and specifying and requisitioning instrumentation (control valves, transmitters, elements, etc.) in chemical and petrochemical plant settings to work in one of the Olson Engineering offices on an array of engineering projects.

The Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer will perform engineering tasks independently but will receive support from other OE Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineers when needed. OE Engineers are responsible for providing for all engineering needs of a project for his/her respective discipline and will be the expert project resource for best practices, engineering standards, and technical requirements. The Engineer should also be willing to provide mentoring to other engineers and routinely review and provide engineering approval for design packages.

The Engineer will develop detailed instrumentation specifications and control systems hardware and infrastructure documents and will support and provide input to the design team to develop design documents including control cabinet layouts, network cabinet drawings, loop drawings, wiring diagrams and other installation drawings.

Responsibilities and Duties Engineers are expected to:

Perform in a team environment. Be proactive regarding Safety. Be receptive of feedback from designers. Frequently take field visits to plant or refinery-type facilities. Learn company and client policies and apply them to daily tasks. Display willingness and judgement to make decisions. Mentor junior designers and engineers, where possible. Coordination with the Project Engineer and Engineer Supervisor shall be required for ongoing project reporting and project development support. Education/Knowledge Experience Five (5) or more years of cumulative relevant experience. Experience in the selection, specification and requisitioning of industrial instrumentation and control systems equipment. Lead Engineer experience a plus. Education An engineering degree from a four-year accredited university is required; Electrical preferred. Applicants without an engineering degree who have previous Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineering work experience and the ability to perform the required tasks will be considered for a Instrumentation and Control Systems Specialist role. A Functional Safety Certificate is a positive. Exida Certified Functional Safety Professional CFSP Exida Certified Functional Safety Expert CPSE UL Certified Functional Safety Professional CFSP TUV Certified Functional Safety Engineer FSE Skills Working knowledge of SmartPlant Instrumentation (aka. INtools, SPI, SI). Applicants should be familiar with commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures used in instrumentation and control systems engineering and design. Strong control systems design skills. Experience in vendor selection, including technical evaluations. Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must. Experience with project estimating is a positive. Ability to specify and requisition instrumentation and control systems equipment, including preparing Instrumentation ISA-style Data Sheets/Specifications, writing Control Systems Hardware Specifications. Ability to develop control systems package documents, including Configuration Scope of Work, Control Narratives, Logic Diagrams, Cause and Effect Matrix, IO Lists, Soft IO Lists /Modbus Address Lists, HMI Graphics Sketches (Excel and AutoCAD), Interlock Lists, Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) Lists, Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS). CAD experience in AutoCAD is a positive. Experience using PIPs and local client standards is a positive. MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Ability to perform assignments within budget and meet strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
