Apply today Job Description The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Health Technician to join our Post Irradiation Examinations (PIE) unit in Niskayuna, NY The PIE unit is responsible for performing nondestructive and destructive examinations in two facilities; the Radioactive Materials Laboratory (RML), and the KAPL Low Level Examination Facility.
These facilities and their technical capabilities are unique in the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.
Testing in the RML primarily focuses on providing data to establish material performance correlations for reactor fuel, poison, and structural materials.
The major testing evolutions are annealing irradiated specimens to failure and performing interim examinations including density measurements, ultrasonic examinations.
Sectioning of specimens are performed and collection of material for chemical analysis.
Specimens are also inspected with optical and scanning electron microscopy.
Work is physically performed utilizing remote equipment called telemanipulators.
The KAPL Low Level Examination Facility primarily performs examinations on reactor plant components that have been removed from service.
Data from examinations is used to better understand and predict the service life and modes of failure for operating fleet equipment.
Nondestructive examinations including dye penetrant testing, detailed measurements, photography, and replication can be performed to document the end of service life conditions.
This position would be to train and become a member of the examination team to perform testing and examinations.
This requires qualifying to work with radioactive and nuclear materials.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or Journeyman's papers in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
