Loyola Medicine is actively recruiting two Chief Residents for the 2025-2026 academic year for the Loyola Medicine-MacNeal Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program in Berwyn (Greater Chicago Area), Illinois.
The Chief Resident role is a one-year position that offers a unique opportunity for recent residency graduates to develop their teaching and leadership skills while gaining valuable clinical experience as an attending physician. Chief Residents will engage in educational, administrative, and patient care responsibilities, including:
Leading teaching conferences for residents and medical students. Presenting CME-accredited lectures to attending physicians. Managing simulation workshops and high-fidelity simulations. Participating in hospital and program committees. Leading a Quality Improvement Project aligned with personal interests. Supervising residents in continuity clinics and as inpatient medicine attending's. Opportunities for moonlighting, including weekend shifts with the hospitalist team (night call taken from home). Each year we invite recent Internal Medicine graduates to join our team as Chief Residents of the MacNeal Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Programs. This one-year position at MacNeal provides outstanding opportunities for recent residency graduates to further develop their teaching and leadership skills while building on clinical experience as an attending physician. Over the years, our Chief Residents have matched into competitive fellowships, gone into hospital medicine and primary care, pursued careers in academic medicine, and progressed to positions such as Program Director and Assistant Program Director.
Loyola MacNeal Hospital is a 374-bed hospital with three residency programs (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Transitional Year). It is located in Berwyn, which is about a 20-minute drive west of the Chicago Loop. MacNeal Hospital is a part of the Loyola Medicine health system, and the residencies are housed under Loyola Medicine Graduate Medical Education. The Chief Residents will be responsible for the forty-two Internal Medicine (IM) residents and the fourteen Transitional Year (TY) residents.
By the end of the academic year, our Chief Residents have a deeper understanding of hospital leadership and administration, graduate medical education and administrative skills. These experiences are invaluable whether one chooses to work in an academic setting or move on to private practice.
An ideal candidate would have the following: Doctor of Medicine Degree (MD or DO) Completion of Internal Medicine Residency Training Program; Board Eligibility in Internal Medicine Interest in medical education and/or curricular development Dedication to teaching and interest in further developing teaching skills.
