POSITION CONCEPT:
The individual who holds this position will investigate criminal cases involving juveniles such as physical and sexual abuse of children, auto theft, armed robbery, runaways, homicide, narcotics, burglaries, computer aided crimes, fraud and unlawful property damage.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The most important and essential job duty of this position is attitude and includes the following: getting along with co-workers, being respectful to members of the community, making sure all employees under his/her command are working together as a team and functioning under pressure. Other duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
• Review patrol reports assigned for investigation
• Examine scene of crime to obtain clues and gather evidence
• Re-interview victim(s), witness(es); attempt to locate witness(es)
• Research and obtain various documents required for investigation (may include pawn shop documents and/or financial records)
• Recover stolen property, log other items into evidence
• Conduct surveillance operations
• Investigate known or suspected criminals and/or facts of case to detect planned criminal activity and/or clues
• Frequent known haunts of criminals; become familiar with criminals to determine criminals' habits, associates, characteristics, aliases, and other personal information
• Arrest or assist in the arrest of criminals or suspects
• Record and report all information to commanding officer
• Maintain contact with victim; advise victim of any updates and/or outcomes of investigation
• Establish and maintain a working relationship with other agencies,
• Compile and forward reports to district attorney's office, according to formalized procedures
• Testify before court and grand jury
• Maintain a good rapport with judges, district attorney's office, co-workers, outside agencies, and lawyers involved
• Respond to situations if called; be available for on-call duty
• Attend in-services and other required training
• Field phone calls and walk in complaints from the public concerning the welfare and behavior of juveniles
• Obtain enhanced knowledge through training of laws and procedures of dealing with juveniles
• Transport and guard juvenile inmates to and from court

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) – some college preferred
• One to Two years related experience and/or training
LANGUAGE AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
• Ability to read and comprehend reports and manuals
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, command staff and the public – in person and over the telephone
• Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics
REASONING ABILITY:
• Ability to deal with situations requiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness and judgement
• Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• Current and Valid Louisiana Driver's License
• POST Enforcement Certificate
• Completion of Basic Investigative Class

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Work shift from 7:00am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday and 7:00am-11:00am Fridays.
Employee is required to work flexible hours when and if needed. In some circumstances employee may be subject to call-out 24 hours a day.
EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS:
Employment with SMPSO is for no specific period. Your employment with SMPSO will be "at will," meaning that either you or the Sheriff may terminate your employment at any time and for any reason, with or without cause. Although your job duties, title, compensation and benefits, as well as the SMPSO's personnel policies and procedures, may change from time to time, the "at will" nature of your employment will not be affected by these changes.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
All employees of the SMPSO will have a probationary period of one (1) year. A job performance evaluation will be done after six (6) months.
