Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Innovation Lab Assistant position for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University (OSU).


The hire will assist the Hatfield Marine Science Center Innovation Lab (iLab) Manager in project development in the iLab in the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. The student will focus on the development of software and hardware based tools for the development of a stereo camera system used by Oregon department of Fish and Wildlife for surveying fish population off our coast. The required prototype software and hardware will enable wireless connection to an underwater camera for configuration and system check when the camera is "on-deck". Extensive field testing and user engagement will inform the development of the tools to be created.


Position Duties The iLab Assistant is a combination of learner, designer, builder and mentor. The student will focus on the engineering and design associated with the study of the marine world, developing and building a new project idea or one proposed by the iLab Manager. The Assistant will collaboratively work with other students ad staff members on a variety of projects.
The student will work up to 10 hours per week from a combination of remote and in lab work. Schedule to be determined based upon student availability.
50% Project innovator – work on design and development of projects within the lab
40% Lab and field testing – setup and conduct tests of systems within the lab
10% Lab technician – aid in the troubleshooting and completion of small projects in the lab

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term* Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
