Laboratory Animal Technician, Vivarium Summary:
Responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning, and observation of research animals in support of the laboratory animal husbandry program.
Cleans and disinfects cages, rooms, and equipment.
Under the direction of the Vivarium Manager and/or Veterinarian, conducts veterinary treatments and health diagnostic tests.
Assists with Veterinarian, Vivarium Manager, and Researcher needs.
This position will support Rowan University research initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Observes, feeds, and cleans research animals.
Documents census and observations.
Monitors and documents environmental parameters in animal rooms.Conducts inventory checks including feed, bedding, and pharmaceuticals.
Receives animal and feed/bedding shipments (must be able to lift 50 pounds).Performs routine handling and restraint of research animals.Administers drugs and treatments and collects biological samples as prescribed by Veterinary Staff.
Cleans and sanitizes cages, animal rooms, and related equipment.Under direction of the veterinarian and/or Vivarium Coordinator, performs diagnostic and technical procedures.
Attends continuing education meetings.Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience:
Associates Degree in Animal Science or related field preferred but not required.
AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician preferred, but not required.
Non-certified candidates will have the opportunity to receive the certification while employed at the cost of the department.
May substitute years of experience for degree.
On-the-job training provided.
Salary:
Minimum hourly rate is $21.92, experience may allow for higher starting rate.
