Position Summary: The UNC Department of Pediatrics is recruiting a Laboratory Research Manager to join the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Darville lab. The successful applicant will report to the Division Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and will oversee, perform, and coordinate research projects. The Lab Manager will organize and manage the functioning of a robust laboratory environment to increase the scientific understanding, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, specifically chlamydial infection. This employee's responsibilities will include laboratory experimentation, planning projects, performing general data analysis, preparing and presenting reports, and contributing to safety control protocols within the laboratory. The incumbent will be expected to conduct complex lab testing, develop methods and procedures to be used in research protocols and experiments, and assist the Principal Investigator with grant proposals, reports, and research publications.
The Lab Manager will also oversee the entire laboratory setting to promote smooth operations, regulatory compliance, and supervision of technicians, students, and resident trainees in lab investigation. The Darville lab is actively engaged in preclinical vaccine testing for Chlamydia trachomatis which includes immunogenicity and challenge protection studies in hundreds of mice using multiple vaccine platforms. The Lab Manager will assist with the planning of these studies and directly oversee their performance, communicate with DLAM, histology core, and flow cytometry core for downstream analyses. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Required competencies include mouse husbandry; experience with mouse models of infection and disease, including skills in mouse dissection and tissue harvest; experience supervising and teaching trainees including undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows; experience in immunology studies and knowledge of immune responses/immunology, vaccinology; and experience working in a laboratory setting specializing in infectious disease and/or immunologic research with focus on BSL2, Chlamydia culture, inclusion forming unit quantification, growing and harvesting Chlamydia, proliferation assays using mononuclear cells, or small animal handling.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience: Priority will be given to candidates who:
* Possess a solid understanding of research principles, study design, laboratory processes, data collection and analysis.
* Can manage animal colony and perform specialized procedures, tests, and refine techniques to meet research objectives.
* Possess technical expertise and practical skill in performing experiments utilizing laboratory and in animal study practices, with preference given to candidates who have experience in studies of Chlamydia trachomatis, mouse genital tract infection, and immune evaluation in vaccinated mice or infected mice.
* Can utilize, repair, and operate equipment and instruments essential to the function of the laboratory with minimal supervision.
* Possess strong oral and written communication skills to assist in grant writing and proposal development.
* Have experience supervising others in a lab setting.
