About Duke Primary Care Pursue your passion for caring with Duke Primary Care, which offers family, adolescent, and internal medicine services as well as urgent, general pediatric, and virtual care at nearly 50 clinic locations across central North Carolina.
Lactation Consultant- Duke Primary Care-Durham Pediatrics-Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm, Occasional Saturday hours (8am-12pm) The certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyadS/he is coach, consultant, teacher, and lactation expertAs a consultant, s/he works collaboratively with the Birthing Center, Newborn and Intensive Care nurseriesPediatrics, OB, Family Practice, and nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonateS/he makes clinical assessments, and uses current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the physicians and familys breastfeeding goalsLactation Services:
Provide lactation support and services to breast- feeding mothers / infants by physician or nurse referralCollaborate with pediatric, birthing center, NB nursery and ICN, OB, Family Practice, ED, and nursing ca re teams to develop complex feeding plansUse current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues, such as nutritional requirements, while respecting the familys breastfeeding goalsCollaborate with interdisciplinary team and outpatient IBCLC to provide continuity of care upon discharge of patientsEducator Participate in developing, implementing and evaluating patient education resources and programs Teach, coach, support breast feeding mothers utilizing evidence-based practice and with DUHS approved educational resourcesTeach, coach, support, and mentor DUH nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice, and support breastfeeding skills to mother-infant dyadAssess local community need for breastfeeding education, and participate/teach in programs to address needsResearch Utilization and InvestigationUtilize evidence-based research and knowledge to support clinical, educational and consultative roles in order to provide a scientific basis for professional nursing practiceCollaborate with the interdisciplinary team and Dept. of APN in research opportunities that will advance the knowledge base and practice of lactation servicesParticipate in interdisciplinary performance improvement and clinical research to promote evidence-based lactation services and to improve clinical outcomesParticipate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of practice, guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols within area of lactationConsultant Serve as a consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare community, and to the larger community in areas of lactationParticipate in the design, implementation and evaluation of programs and projects in lactation and breastfeeding to meet goals and objectives of DUHSIdentifies and analyzes system barriers to provision of excellent care a nd develops plans to resolve barriersProfessional Leadership and Development Role model professionalism through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thin king, and problem-solving skills Assume responsibility for professional self- developmentQuality of work reflects high professional and ethical standards Communicate effectively to maintain positive working relationshipsDemonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizationMaintain certification as lactation consultantRN Lactation Consultants must have a minimum of 25 continuing education hours/year Enhance the body of knowledge in nursing, lactation, and breastfeeding through exchange of ideas and knowledge using methods such as posters, newsletters, presentations, and publications. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelors degree in nursing, health, nutrition, or related field required.
Experience No experience beyond certification
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications Certification by IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) is required.
