Under general supervision, the Lead Locksmith performs skilled journey-level locksmith work in the installation, adjustment, maintenance, repair, and replacement of all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devices and other types of lock hardware such as latches, door checks, and panic bars, including changing of lock combinations and making of keys for the buildings, structures, and equipment of The Claremont Colleges consortium. This position requires strong organizational skills and an ability to manage unexpected events and changes in priorities with composure. This role assists the Carpenter and Key Shop Supervisor with daily operations, oversight, work order management, and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Installs all types of locks and integrated security systems, access control devices, and lock hardware, including panic bars, and performs the carpentry necessary for such installation.Installs and maintains electrical access and exit control systems.Adjusts, maintains, repairs, and replaces door locks, padlocks, tumbler locks, combination locks, and various other lock hardware such as panic bars, door checks, latches, catches, fasteners, and door closures.Designs master key systems which include sub-master and single keys and maintains records.Operates key-cutting machines.Changes locker combinations and enters numbers of lockers and combinations in an official register.Changes lock combinations using code systems and code machines.Repairs safes and safe-locking systems.Works with college staff in devising systems to prevent break-ins and pilferage.Opens or removes locks which cannot be opened by ordinary means.Instructs college personnel in the operation of key-cutting machines and code machines.Safely operates hand and power tools and equipment used in the locksmithing trade.May use a lathe, drill press, and other power tools in forming parts for locks, lock hardware, and/or safes.May assist in preparing routine reports, material lists, estimating job costs, preparing job records, and making surveys of locksmith needs.May provide work direction to staff assigned to perform locksmith work.Perform other related duties as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Number of Direct Reports: 2Title(s) of Direct Report(s): LocksmithRecruit, select, train, evaluate, and develop staff. Clearly communicate job requirements and expectations. Coordinate training and resources to support the performance of work duties. Provide ongoing coaching that is balanced, helpful, timely, and contributes to a work environment of open communication, ownership of duties, and trust. Address performance issues early, create appropriate documentation, and ensure follow through. Collaborate with Human Resources as needed. Complete annual written performance reviews.
QUALIFICATIONS The following qualifications are required to perform the essential functions of this position, or the individual must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other qualifications not listed below.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or the equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship program of at least four years' duration in the locksmithing trade, or five years of full-time, paid journey-level experience in the locksmithing trade that includes one to two years in a lead or supervisory capacity and thorough training in master key systems and electronic locking and security systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, determine linear measurements, compute areas and volumes of conventional shapes and forms, and compute approximate weight of objects. Construction and repair of various types of locks, access controls and locking devices. Electronic keys and access control devices. Integrated security systems. Current practices, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in the locksmithing trade and related trades. Properties, adaptability, and uses of various metals, wood, and other locksmithing trade materials. Safety and health regulations and practices pertinent to the locksmithing trade. Computer software and equipment used in the locksmithing trade. Capabilities of computer applications, systems, and hardware used in the locksmithing trade. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. Maintain accurate files and records, some of which may be confidential. Be available for overtime work and to be on-call. Fluent written and oral English skills. Effective and professional communication skills with a diverse population of employees, TCCS leadership, vendors, and contracted personnel.
Other: A valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to TCC's automobile liability insurance provider.
Preferred Qualifications: Key Shop system experience. Work experience in facilities operations for an institution of higher education.
Work Schedule: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Will be added to on-call rotation to include weekends. May be required to work holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the organization or business unit.
COMPENSATION Pay: The hourly salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with the duties, responsibilities, and qualifications required for the position, between $35 - $38.50 per hour.
