Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About the role:As our Shop Manager, you will be responsible for the organization and operation of our full-capability machine shops in Berkeley and Santa Clara. This includes managing a team of Prototype Machinists working with engineers to make custom mechanical parts, while maintaining a shop environment that encourages collaboration with Engineering. You will provide feedback on designs to make manufacturing faster, easier, and more repeatable. You will think quickly, produce quality work, and anticipate concerns before they become blockers. You will also spend time with engineers to understand the workflow of their projects. You will be the liaison between the shop and the company. You will also be responsible for creating and implementing policies and workflows that keep the shop clean, safe, organized, and efficient. You will be responsible for enforcing shop policies and training staff.
This position is based in Berkeley four days a week and Santa Clara one day a week. What You'll Do:Maintain our internal job tracking system, schedule and prioritize job requests, having comfort working with ever-changing priorities and requirements.Improve processes using tools and data to make quality parts faster with more predictability.Work with internal program managers and other resource managers to continuously develop processes that improve our design and fabrication capabilities. For example, arrange and lead continuous improvement initiatives such as more efficient CAM programming, more efficient tool and consumables inventory management, coordination with purchasing, shipping and receiving, etc.Manage a team of experienced Prototype Machinists to empower them to do their best work.Create development plans that ensure the fulfillment of growth paths for each team member.Schedule and interface with external vendors for post-processing needs.Conduct design reviews with engineers to advise on best practices for DFM (design for manufacturing).Responsible for engaging and managing the work of contractors in our shops.Work cross-functionally to arrange and perform routine preventative maintenance on the tools to ensure optimum performance and minimal downtime.Develop, enforce, and train staff on safety policies for the shop.Keep stock of materials and parts needed for proper operation of tools, disposal of waste, etc.Work with finance and leadership groups to plan and procure new tools and advocate for capital expenditure additions.Make parts as needed (i.e. machine and fabricate parts required for other projects). Up to 20% of your time.What you'll need:10-15 years of experience working in a machine shop, and at least 5 years of managing a shop.Experienced in hiring top talent, providing constructive performance feedback aligned with company values and goals, collaborating with direct reports to set growth objectives, and mentoring them to achieve those goals.Familiarity with post-processing operations for parts such as anodizing.Experience using a task management tool (such as Airtable) to schedule jobs and collect data useful for making informed decisions.Knowledge and experience in training others on safe working practices for operating machinery.Experience making parts, deburring/cleaning, and delivering parts to internal customers, and creating and manipulating parts in CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, NX, etc) and CAM (creating toolpaths in HSMWorks, NXCAM, MasterCAM, etc.)Experience and strong understanding of various fabrication tools and processes (CNC machining, laser cutting, welding, waterjet, plasma cutting, wire-EDM, 3D printing, injection molding, die casting, vacuum forming, etc). Experience working with various materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, etc.Experience with basic metrology and working knowledge of GD&T.Experience using hand tools and manual machines such as mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws.Strong interpersonal communication skills.$145,000 - $190,000 a year
